I'd advise other grant seekers that Autzen is a tough nut to crack, has an extensive, confusing application, and makes pretty small grants at the end of the day. They don't seem able to share when they will make funding decisions.

No communication from them - just a static website.

Their website doesn't share what they fund or really clarify their priorities, so you have to go sleuthing to figure out amounts and the general theme of what they fund. My impression has always been that it's a closed door process because really, the Trustees want to fund whatever project they like. It's fine to be "just" a family foundation with personal priorities, but presenting yourself as something more professional and lucrative is, I think, a disservice to nonprofits.
Increase transparency around funding priorities and streamline your application. Why ask for staff salaries in addition to the 990? You can flip to page 10 and see for yourself. Why not simply require a link to our Candid profile? Add a tutorial or explain what you actually want in the fiscal portion - a typical grant writer cannot break out "current asset amount vs. cash and cash equivalents" - why can't I just give you a balance sheet that will give you all the info?
The LOI and application seem to have the same timeline, which is so weird.
It's nice to see that they more or less consistently support kids and the environment.

Read the directions for supplemental materials very carefully. We submitted financial documents for the wrong fiscal year, based on an incorrect interpretation of what they wanted. Our proposal was discarded before being reviewed for that demerit.

The foundation hired a new director in 2016 and we immediately had great rapport when we solicited a meeting. Her responsiveness since then has declined somewhat, but she assured us that the board is passionate about our mission, which encouraged us to prioritize them in our communications and has resulted in larger gifts.

Good
Their philanthropic goal is to make Oregon a better place. They do seem to fund a wide variety of organizations throughout the state, and especially focus on youth opportunities.
