We had a site visit from a board member and program officer. One hour tour and review of our application. Went really well, I think they were impressed, but did ask about some financial details so be prepared to answer questions about your financial statements.

Very responsive, friendly, professional. One of our favorite foundations to work with and would recommend them highly.

Have an annual grant cycle, not every three years. Broaden scope of activities you fund to operational support/unrestricted funding. Award larger amounts.

Staff are very responsive to inquiries and website with guidelines is up to date. I would recommend asking for a phone call with a staff member before submitting an request for capital funding - they were responsive to our questions and comments about the nuances of our proposed project.

The Bothin Foundation was extremely helpful to our organization. Their funding parameters were very clear and their communication was fast and direct. We appreciate their generosity and willingness to work with our organization. We also loved that they work electronically.

The program officers are very responsive, feel free to contact them with questions. Also do your research, this funder is VERY specific (and somewhat unusual) with what they fund.

Over the years, it seems like they have become less interested in grants to pay for computers, so if you are interested in this, you have to have a compelling reason other than "our existing computers are old."

Easy to reach out to via email, and quick to answer questions. They are pretty transparent about what they are looking for.
Good
So great to have a foundation that is purely focused on Capital grants! There should be more of them.
Proactively address when you will and won't consider a grant for new computers by clarifying guidelines for this on your website.
Have a narrow and clear focus.

It was a very positive experience. Tell them why you need the funds if for infrastructure repairs, and whether it's urgent. And if you find out that it's going to cost more than you originally were quoted for the repair, tell them that.

Always wrote back right away when I had questions or needed input.

Keep your current process and policy of being so understanding of these infrastructure issues that we face. It was the best experience and felt like you really cared about us getting this fixed.
I think they only fund in a cycle, so maybe only every 2 years, so choose carefully when and what you ask for so that you get the biggest problem solved.
They understand that there are few sources of funds for infrastructure and that they are a primary source. They listen and understand when things cost more than you anticipated because additional problems were discovered when the final repair was to be made and your contact may advocate for additional funds if she really thinks you need them.
