The staff are very helpful and contact information is transparent. Since merging the Silicon Valley office with San Francisco and an increased focus on their own programs, funding for other nonprofits can be more stringent. Before starting a relationship with United Way, be sure to know all your facts and figures because you will surely be asked.

Good
The website is revamped which makes contacting their departments much easier. Staff will help answer questions and seem friendly. They are focused on working with other larger nonprofit partners in the area, so smaller organizations are at a slight disadvantage.
Good
Their mission statement is clearly stated on their website and across their messaging. They have implemented programs across the area to help reach their philanthropic goals, such as SparkPoint Centers that help reduce poverty.
Many non profits have a prolific volunteer section, and United Way is lacking this engagement piece. Update your options!
United Way has been around for quite a while, and it can be challenging to become a partner - if your organization is small. But if you can get in with United Way, they will be a great asset for you, your organization, and the people you serve.
Not a grantee
United Way has been a big name in the community and around the country for a long time. They have done a great job of being an active agent of change within the changing landscape of the Bay Area. As problems arise in new forms, they meet those new challenges instead of being stagnate and stuck in old ways.

Grant Applicant - applied in 2010
They are very eager to find organizations to fulfill their mission with programs that they create (ex. Sparkpoint). They require a great deal of relationship maintenance, lots of turnover in employees and do not fund the full cost of programs.
