I've had really positive experiences with all of the program officers I've worked with there (three for three different grants). They take a deep, substantive interest in the issues they're funding, and the projects they support.

I don't understand how Packard identifies its friends among nonprofits, but once they do, they are very supportive funders, more down-to-earth than other funders most of the time. Outside of the grant process, though, they often make faux pas in interactions with nonprofits and human service clients.

I'm impressed with their commitment to international smart environmentalism -- both conservation and energy innovation. Also impressed with their leaning more on equity domestically and gratefully they are not always trumpeting themselves about either. But I don't know how effective they are in energy innovation, and they tend to fund the usual suspects domestically. Which is okay because often the usual suspects are doing good work! Maybe it's okay but it would be nice to see them develop competency in working with organizations of color.
Stay as sweet as you are now.
I like the fact that you say you designed the new building to be able to be built inexpensively and greenly by others and that you would give people the plans. Has anyone taken you up on that and built the same building elsewhere?
These comments are mostly about their grants to community organizations. I suspect that the mega grants are related to being of special interest to a family member (example: Monterey Aquarium).
Unrestricted funds. Unrestricted funds. Unrestricted funds! Also they are modest as individuals and as a foundation.

For a large foundation, the staff are extremely helpful and accessible, more so than many small foundations we work with. We have been welcomed at the foundation with respect from day one. Straight-forward application process and ongoing support for many consecutive years.

If you are going for general operating, just have a good story. If you are going for capital, have a solid fundraising plan to share
