Reviewer 4201 - Grant Applicant - applied in 2018
We submitted an LOI and were invited in August to submit a full proposal. We received the Trust's response in late November. I appreciated that the invitation to submit the full proposal included specific advice about how to strengthen our application. The process was straightforward and reasonable. While we were of course disappointed our proposal wasn't funded, I'm glad we pursued this opportunity and will certainly look to the Trust next time we have a compelling project that meets their criteria.

The "no thank you" letter we received included information about how many proposals were received and reviewed and how many of those were funded (48 funded out of 149). This is useful information. It also included a line that many worthwhile proposals were not approved due to limited funds; however, the letter goes on to explain that "other common reasons for denial of funding were: failure to follow the guidelines for proposals, failure to follow Grant Reporting Guidelines on a previous award, project inadequately described or justified, budget inadequately described or justified, and project not well-aligned with Trust interests." It would be tremendously useful to know if our proposal wasn't funded simply because they can't fund every ask—or if there were serious flaws that took us out of the running. Especially in light of the fact that our invitation included some advice, I'd be deeply grateful to know if the reviewers felt I adequately followed that advice or not. I realize including this sort of information would generate additional work for the Trust and risks inviting argument from orgs whose proposals are rejected, but it would be terrific if there is some way to know whether a rejection is a "can't win 'em all" or "we really need to do a better job telling our story through a budget" or whatever.
Clarity of expectations and of their own priorities. I never felt any anxiety that our project would be out of alignment with the Trust's goals, since they are very clear and straightforward and easily accessible via their website.
