Take the time to get to know their programs where your work matches, and to plan on several conversations with the staff there.

With staff attrition they have not been filling grantmaking positions and that has made it more difficult to work with them or know where the foundation is going.

I wasn't with the organization when the relationship started, but from my understanding, one of the inroads was one of our employees speaking at an event and a program officer in attendance who approached her b/c they were interested in our work. S

One of the most accessible funders we work with.

Builds *true* partnerships with its grantees : engages in constant feedback, brings grantees and other stakeholders together regularly, and understands the unpredictability of the nonprofit sector.

The Foundation's program officers are extremely helpful and know exactly what they are looking for in an application. Definitely give them a call or hear them speak at a Meet the Funders panel before you complete the LOI. They are also a great advocate for nonprofits and always sharing fantastic resources with us.

This foundation does an extraordinary job with their donor's investment(s). They are thorough and fund an array of great causes. They often hold seminars about new areas of funding. Very friendly, no seed money though.

The CA Community Foundation are deeply engaged in the community, and open to bold new ways of doing business. Don;t be afraid to propose audacious ideas, but be ready to back up your assumptions.

In my experience, they are really open, and often you will find them at conferences and community meetings, and ready to engage.

They definitely put their $$$$ where there mouth is, AND they do advocacy.
Use you amazing reputation and power to get more elected leaders to see the sector as dynamic job creators and sources of investment resources...not just charities.
They don't sugarcoat things, and if they aren't interested, they let you know fast, rather than leading you on a wild goose chase.

They have two grantmaking paths. One is the stated one. The other is very informal, not always even a proposal, about making grants to friends or as favors to other foundations. That one is a lot faster and has a lot more money in it. That's the one I was on so I know.

Took me two years to get an appointment with someone and they have funded this organization in the past before I was here.

Tell the president to stop talking about herself all the time. Even her own staff are embarassed by it.
Makes a lot of community grants to POC orgs.
Thank you for your post. A point of clarification, there are four paths to securing a grant from CCF:
1. Submit a LOI as directed on the website. Before applying, we strongly suggest talking to a program associate about fit with program strategy.
2. Submit a response to an open published Request for Proposals. We issue those for program areas that are funding a cohort of grantees working together towards shared goals.
3. Submit a response to an invitation-only request for proposals. This is similar to the second path but with groups that are pre-selected often because of their prior work. Often these are joint funding opportunities with other funders.
4. The foundation sometimes makes small grants under $25,000 to nonprofits that are not yet eligible to apply for a core operating or programmatic grant. For example, a nonprofit may be working in one of our priority areas and be well aligned with the program strategy, but not yet have a strategic plan, which is a requirement for funding. CCF will sometimes provide partial funding for the plan.
The first three paths require board approval at one of four quarterly meetings. The last can be approved by staff.
Please talk to a program officer if you have any questions. Our list of staff can be located at https://www.calfund.org/about-ccf/staff/ .
