We received a generous grant from this funder in 2017. The purpose of the grant was to provide disaster relief for fire victims in Solano, Sonoma, and Napa. As part of the funder’s support of the grant, we were given access to experienced consultants to improve our understanding of the art of producing effective communications such as press releases and social media messaging. This advice was very helpful in subsequent rounds of publicity.
When we send in a final report, it would be nice to know it was received. A simple e-mail would do.
Know they are there. Keep them on your 'go to' list.
They offered the grant to us after the 2017 wildfires; we did not apply.
Anticipates community need.

I would recommend you are well versed in TCWF priority areas before making a call and be assured your mission aligns. Also, TCWF s
Program officers attend various community outreach events, such as funder panels. I would recommend attending and introducing yourself and your organization.

I believe TCWF has been very responsive to the unique health care needs of the community. I appreciate them reaching out and sharing with local nonprofits their new funding priorities and goal to be more equitable in supporting system changes.
Good
I am proud of the advocacy work they are doing and how they have adapted to the changing political and policy issues facing communities in California.
Smaller nonprofits need opportunities to be considered for collaborative grants. I represent a collaborative group of nonprofits in the Inland Empire and would value additional capacity building funding opportunities to help build the infrastructure and sustainability of smaller nonprofits in the region.
Thank you for the work and advocacy you do for those voices in our community who are underserved and under represented.

They can be a great partner. They get nonprofits and the need for core support. Their funding priorities, while prioritizing health, understand the connection of health issues and other areas -- poverty, safety net, criminal justice, etc.

They are not super interested in being contacted by phone - just go ahead and send an LOI for them to review. Another way to start building a relationship with their staff would be to present on panels or otherwise participate in conferences they are attending that cover issues in their program areas.

They don't love to take phone calls from prospective applicants. But I really appreciate that they have a highly diverse staff and board, both in terms of race/ethnicity and also life and professional experiences. This is one foundation that is not run by older white corporate men!
Good
I really appreciate that they provide general support, usually renewable for multiple years, and that they fund community organizing and advocacy for policy and systems change.
Hire a few more staff! Everyone there seems very busy and overworked.
I wish more funders were like them!
Their program staff are kind, knowledgeable, professional, decent people.

They have a very top down approach. If you don't fit their model, you are not considered at all. It was impossible to get them to open their minds to work beyond what they are already doing.

It is best to talk with someone at the foundation first, if at all possible, to flesh our your ideas per what they are looking for, which can vary by grant period, depend on recent grants awarded, etc. They are open to these conversations. :)

I often attend events or see public education that is tagged with them as a sponsor, always good causes related to health and community wellness!
More opportunities for funder staff and agency staff to informally mix would be great, if at all possible.
They are one of the few funders that give general support!
Simple application process (LOI versus complex proposal).

Don't try to ask questions. They aren't very communicative. Go by the information that they publish.

Before 2014
Bad
They are quite opaque. They don't engage in dialogue that tells you anything beyond what they publish. You have no idea where you stand until you actually get the acceptance or rejection letter. It is quite frustrating, and makes planning very difficult.
Average
They provide large, unrestricted grants, which is incredibly helpful to the nonprofits that they fund. The size and length of their grants can really move the needle. But the lack of transparency affects their ability to build deeper relationships with nonprofits that go beyond funding.
When you don't engage in dialogue with a potential or existing grantee, it exacerbates the power dynamic, and feels almost disrespectful. It depersonalizes the relationship.
They keep their applications and communication simple.
