I got the feeling that they wanted to be seen as part of a funding group so they gave us a small grant as a way of staying in with the big funders in that group.

On two occasions have heard comments from them that made me cringe deeply as they have been insensitive crossing over into unrecognized racism.
Laps up praise.
Fund direct services to poor people. That is so valuable and important.

I have not approached the Ralph M Parsons Foundation for a conference so I do not have any direct contacts with the foundation.

Ralph M Parsons is a benefactor for KCET in Los Angeles for educational TV programming in Los Angeles. They provide financial support for children's education and musical education.
Good
The financial support of educational programming for both adults and children is imperative for a erudite society of thinkers. If you watch the big four: ABC, CBS, NBC, TBS you do not get the critical thinking you have with KCET and KCVR.
Support more programs like Cosmos and National Geographic.
Ralph M Parsons Foundation stands for philanthropic support of the arts and education.
Support educational TV programs.

They are very upfront in their guidelines, and the President and CEO answers the phone when you call. Take advantage of that. Even though they list the organizations, they have funded, on their web site, there are a few outliers that might indicate that your organization is a good fit, when it isn't.

Good
Their staff is very approachable both via the phone and at a variety of in-person events. They seem to have a strong connection with the Los Angeles philanthropic community, and thus is able to speak to trends and other resources.

I would not approach this foundation if you work in the disabilities arena. I am not sure why at some point, not recently, this foundation actually mentioned in their website that they did fund this area. I thought as discriminatory --my opinion

A lot seems to depend on whether other foundations have funded you for the same thing. They don't want to be the first to fund stuff.

I don't think they realize how patronizing they come across
If they fund you they write the check right away.
