Love that this foundation is willing to step up and support capital or technology projects that others won't touch - They aren't worried about glamour or a naming opportunity and trust you to identify the project of greatest need (even if it is something as simple as a restroom renovation or a new wheelchair lift).

Good
Very accessible - You can call them at any point in the application process. They have very clear guidelines and will tell you exactly what they need and will/won't fund (such as no subscription fees when purchasing a new software platform).
Bad
I like that they let nonprofits determine what they need most, rather than establish a very specific platform like some of the other major funders in the area.

Call before applying. The Program Officers are very receptive to calls and will let you know whether your project is a priority for the foundation

The funder helps to build the capacity of L.A.-based nonprofits by funding capital projects, including technological improvements.
They only fund organizations in the Los Angeles area.
Supporting capital projects, which are often hard to get funded.

They are pretty straightforward. We had hoped they'd fund the amount requested, but we know they get lot of requests. They also do capital campaigns, which is nice. to know. They have put their names on things, but that isn't a requirement.

Love the fact that the Ahmanson Foundation is very approachable -- you can call them at any stage in the application process or with any type of question and someone on their program staff will be there to help you. Also love that this Foundation truly understands the needs of nonprofits and is willing to fund the things other foundations won't touch (new restrooms, technology upgrades, etc.) -- they aren't out for fame and visibility -- just want to help us as organizations grow stronger.

Be forthright regarding your needs and the impact it will have on the organization. They fund capital projects, but the impact needs to be more than just the project.

They are frequently at community events and have been available for discussion regarding the project, prior to the proposal stage.
Good
It would be nice to have more detail, on its website, regarding the occasional operational support that is provided. This would help nonprofits during the planning process, and would make initial conversations more targeted.
They are very responsive, and get to know organizations well enough to respond to their needs in a timely manner.

The process was open and we were able to work directly with a program officer. Everyone there was nice.

Just be honest. They are supportive and understand the realities of nonprofits. They prefer capital.
