It's very hard to break into the ranks of Doheny grantees, no matter how well your program aligns with the foundation's focus areas.

When financial crises occur, e.g., the Great Recession, pandemic, or market downturns, Doheny is one of the first foundations to reduce grant amounts. Other foundations increase grant amounts when times get rough for nonprofits, but Doheny is more interested in protecting the foundation's assets.
Feedback on online proposal: A. The foundation asks about government funding for the program in three different places in the proposal, with slight variations. The proposal could be simplified—and require less of applicants’ time to complete—by asking for only one of these. 1) In “sources of funds for program,” the foundation asks for the percentage of funds the program receives from government sources. 2) In “committed funders,” the foundations asks for the amount of government funding for the program that is included in the committed funders total. 3) Immediately following No. 2, the foundation asks for the amount of government funding the program received in the most recent year. If the foundation is interested in the importance of government funding to a program, No. 1 should be sufficient. B. There are not enough characters (105) in Committed Funders to give the full names and amounts for three funders.
Clarity about what the foundation is interested in funding.

The application itself is straight forward, but the monthly themes can be a bit confusing. If you are confused about your programs alignment with the themes, Doheny's administrative staff is typically helpful in clarifying.

The monthly themes are confusing. Perhaps the funder could do away with them, or be more specific about what types of programs fit into each theme.

I was always impressed when looking over the list of those they fund. It covers a wide range of issues.
Keep your wonderful spirit alive. You help so many non-profit agencies achieve their missions.
Be honest and detailed in writing a grant and you will be treated with respect and honesty.
The Doheny Foundation is fair and straightforward. They answer questions and work with you to insure you understand their process.

We're a first-time applicant and realize that the Foundation mostly funds existing grantees. Nonetheless we'll try. The application process is described well on the website, and the grants portal is easy to use.
