Never hear anything. They generally either instantly decline or let the computer auto-decline grants. Grants should not be decided by store managers.

Cons

Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Difficult to work with, Culturally incompetent, Bureaucratic

We had been in discussions with the regional contact about our proposal and were encouraged to apply. We were still not funded. I have since discouraged other clients from applying. It appears to be very political.

The application is complex with requirements to pull data in ways that just doesn't make sense for a medium sized organization, and requiring data that would be unnecessarily obtrusive to collect for our traumatized clients. That said, it was worth a shot . . . although we did not get funded.

I was surprised to find out that if you are funded by a United Way organization, you are not eligible to apply for a Wal-Mart Foundation grant. This isn't mentioned on the grant information page, only when you complete the questionnaire to determine eligibility. It would have saved me time if had it been on the grant information page. Many human services providers will run into this issue as many of us are funded by a United Way organization.

Bureaucratic

I haven't had any issues applying with the Wal-Mart Foundation. We've received the full grant amount we asked for for the last two years (2016 & 2017) and the grant application is nothing out of the ordinary. There are lots of demographics questions on the application. After we received the grant, someone from a PR company reached out to get more information to promote the grant and do a site visit but I heard nothing after the initial contact.

Be sure to read their guidelines and instructions immediately before applying. I delayed in completing our application and the rules of the game changed in the meantime. But they did not reject the application for 90 days saying it did not comply with their current process.

We've received three rounds of funding over the past several years with a few requests in between that were not funded. We certainly appreciate their grants. The application and reports are somewhat detailed for a corporate foundation, but their level of giving justifies the preparation time and effort.
