Make sure you fit within their scope and follow their instructions on the application process. They are a fantastic organization to work with, no question, but it is a longer process because it's a valuable one - both you and they need to know that it's a good fit.

The trust has a lot of information on their website and it's important to browse through all of it to understand their process. As an added bonus, a lot of the information they provide applies to all grant writing. After I read that, I approached the fund well ahead of the application (in our case a year and a half) to get a sense of the timeline and to answer any questions that I had. After the application is received and approved, it takes several months before it's reviewed by their trustees so you need to plan accordingly. The letter of inquiry is not too hard to complete but the full proposal is very extensive and will require the help of many other people to complete (CEO, CFO, Board President). The fund asks for updated budgets and project status throughout the review, so it's helpful to keep your back end documentation organized so that your numbers stay consistent. The grant officer that was assigned to us was very helpful.

I've received responses to all of my inquiries within 24 hours.
Some requests for the full proposal could be streamlined.
Regarding funding for the arts, I think the trust's commitment to build capacity and leverage more funds are well accomplished by their process.
Our grant officer really took the time to listen to how they could make a difference, not only by giving us money, but also by finding ways to leverage more support for us.

We felt they looked more closely at the big picture than we had - and it pushed us to thing bigger too.
Keep raising the bar. Even the process of applying was a force for good in our organization at all levels.
Take the time to be completely organized internally before you submit the LOI.
They have a very consistent process.

The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust has an incredibly thorough grant process. Their program directors take time to learn the ins and outs of the organization and the project. Our program director guided us through the process and was such a fantastic resource to our organization.

Do have an initial meeting with a representative-we attended a grantmakers roundtable to meet. Also make sure your project plans are complete with a clear timeline, financials and know why you are doing what you are doing and how it will benefit both the organization and the community.

In one instance we received contradictory information from different Trust representatives about what would or wouldn't be funded.
Our experience with the Trust was positive, informative and supportive throughout the process. Their website provides clear guidance on eligibility. They provide numerous resources on their website to help grantees prepare a successful proposal. The Trust responded to our LOI within 10 days of submission (pretty fast!). They are very clear that the process of making a final decision takes six to nine months, so plan accordingly. Our personal interaction with Trust representatives were mostly timely, and always helpful. During the site visit, our assigned program manager was extremely prepared and knowledgeable about the project. He brought an openness and curiosity that was disarming and productive. We really appreciated his genuine interest in getting to know as individuals and as an organization. Though the review process is rigorous, we found it extremely beneficial in many ways.
They are very thorough! They take the time to review your proposal in detail and dive deep to better understand all the relevant factors.

The foundation is very responsive and helpful in their process. We found that communication with them was key in the process. Paying diligent attention to the exact wording of their requests is paramount, as is careful planning and consideration of all aspects of their application. The application process was quite lengthy for a non-profit without professional staff.
