Benedum is open to new and innovative ideas and truly values partnerships. Before making a proposal reach out to one of their program officers and find out what work is being funded in your area.

Continue to be so involved at the community level. That’s the only way to truly understand what is needed.
I think it would be helpful for folks to understand that Benedum shoots for systems level change. All too often individuals seeking funding are working at the individual level and have no concept how to take an issue and tackle it from the macro perspective.
Communication and involvement with the projects which have been funded.

I would recommend that the application directly address the ways in which the work is beneficial to the target community/population, how the work relates to contextual factors such as other, potentially supportive state/regional/national efforts, and how the effort can be sustained over time. Being able to vision the short-term and long-term impact of the work is essential, in my opinion.

Quite successful, with increased opportunity for success due to purposeful actions in cross-pollinating across funded partners. I value that tremendously.

I would estimate that the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation is quite successful. And, working increasingly smart and effective with time.
Please continue your efforts to integrate efforts across funded partners and efforts of other foundations. That is thoughtful, creative, and in my opinion leads to even more benefit and opportunity over time. Thank you so much.
Openness to communication, true ability to listen to needs and to understand not just surface need but underlying cause and address those issues.

Call Kim to talk through your idea before applying. She is a smart cookie & can guide you in the right direction. She helped me tremendously and actually redirected me and saved me a lot of hassle on our mobile dental program.

Contact the program officer in your area of interest (e.g. "Education") first to have a conversation. Their staff are very involved in shaping projects and asks. This is technically an open call, but really geared towards invited applicants. They have quarterly board meetings so be aware of when those happen to be approved as soon as possible.

Very responsive (although busy, of course!) program officers and admin staff.
Good
They know that some of their funding is supporting salary/overhead for smaller orgs but still require that it is written up as "program costs" on many cases. I think it would be simpler if they just set an allowed range for operating costs and openly supported that.
I love this foundation and I loved working with our program officer!
Supports Appalachian transition in a way that is both progressive and culturally palatable - which is a pretty tough line to walk!
