I did not write the grant that was funded, but was tasked with writing the report at the end. The United Way staff I worked with was great- patient with my questions, helpful with advice and very responsive. If you get stuck, my advice is reach out to the United Way staff right away, to ease your mind!

Clarify the outcomes section of the application.
For anyone involved in DEI/RJ work, I have found the 21 Day Equity Challenge materials invaluable.
Pretty much everything related to the physical application - use of an excellent proposal portal, lots of character space and opportunity to attach a previous recent proposal.

They should be prepared to be detailed in their response of how they will impact the community with the Non-Profit Proposal.

This funder is so focused on equity that the only things they fund are equity related.

Don't forget the grounds-level safety net, not just the big guys.
They are sitting on millions in cash and investments and dole out minimum grants.
Have no idea. Focus has been on equity for years and I don't see any change. Meanwhile, older safety net agencies are barely hanging on.

Please, inform the residents of Washtenaw County about these grants or funds when they call or visit this site in Washtenaw or the 211/the 1-800 number. I was not assisted and I am still trying to obtain help with my DTE account.

Program officers are very friendly. Suggest taking a look at the application well in advance and playing around with different choices for the single choice questions, as each one reveals different things.

I might rethink the outcomes and measurement section of the application when they are funding general operating support-- like if we're asking for money for general expenses, it is difficult to clearly prove and measure specific outcomes.
I really think that United Way Washtenaw gets it. They have built strong relationships with area agencies and understand our needs.
I think they are doing a fantastic job of creating funding opportunities that align with what local nonprofits really need. They have a great ear to the ground in regards to how they can best support local agencies.

It is best to meet with a representative prior to beginning your application process. This helps with understanding of what you are applying for, what you will need when applying, and how to access the application. It really does simplify the process.
Both representatives that assisted my organization were very helpful. As we continued the process, we were assigned a person to transcribe our grant; when I say this was helpful…that is putting it lightly. This alleviated a lot of stress and also brought to light the voids, and other important areas of our non profit that needed to be strengthened. Thank you United Way.

The Washtenaw County United Way staff were so friendly, helpful, understanding, and patient from the pre-application interview, through my submission of the grant proposal. I written several grant proposals, and this one was short and to the point. But, of course, there always seem to be bumps along the way. My biggest one was clicking on the “Upload a File” button, and getting no response whatsoever. The WCUW staff kindly let me e-mail the files to them. They uploaded the files, and submitted my application for me! I was so grateful to them!
