McKnight is a very generous but casual organization. The proposals are fairly easy to complete. It's more about the site visit, your history with them as a grantee, your reputation in the community, and whether your work fits their priorities.

McKnight is a very involved, very supportive community arts funder.
Make the different funding areas and processes more clear and distinct. It can be difficult to figure out where you fit. Also the online system is not the most user friendly and reports aren't often available in a timely manner. I often have to ask for them.
Provides ongoing funding to help make programs sustainable. Also makes a point of listening to the nonprofit. For example, they currently require applicants to complete a DataArts survey, which is very time consuming. They made a point of asking us if it is useful for us to complete that work -- they were not just concerned with its benefit to them.

McKnight is an amazing funder - we all rely on them in our industry. They have decided to reduce their funding levels for organizations like ours across the board, so we expect less than we used to receive, but the foundation is still absolutely critical to our success.

They have a very specific language they like to use, so make sure to fully understand their guidelines, theory of change, etc. There's lots of information on their website--study it carefully to make sure you're a good match. The staff members are very helpful--call before you apply.
