The Pohlad Family Foundation is a rare jewel among funders. They seek to find out your true needs and trust their grantees. The grants and reporting process is streamlined and not overly burdensome. Pohlad staff are knowledgeable, passionate, and seek greater understanding. I would recommend that you build a relationship with the program officers if you fit in their funding guidelines. Their staff are committed to the work and show up in spaces to advance the cause.

The program officers with whom we worked are exceptionally collaborative. It didn't feel like they were making us jump through hoops to get funding, but that they were walking along side us in mission.
Email was the most effective way to get responses to questions.

Their new focus on youth and family homelessness has given the foundation a clear goal that it did not seem to have before. They have taken on the task and are not only funding, but bringing the funded organizations together to learn from each other and foster collaboration.
Keep up the two-year funding. It takes a long time and a lot of work to get a new, innovative program up and running. Your two-year commitment makes it much more possible!
The program officers come across as inquisitive and interested in learning about the field; they also share what they learn and help make connections to other organizations and contacts with a shared mission.

The Pohlad Family Foundation is one of the best foundation's to work with! I would recommend reaching out to one of their program officers to talk through your idea first and get their input. Their feedback is very helpful in the planning stages of the proposal, they are very honest about what they are looking for in a quality proposal.

Staff is extremely easy to talk to! I would recommend calling them about an idea verses submitting through their online portal. I never got a response from the online form, but got instant connection through a phone call.
Good
They are open and up front in that they don't know what works best to solve the greatest issues facing the community, they look to community organizations doing the on the ground work to inform them.
Building relationships with organizations through the LOI, site visit, and awarding phases.

Grant is involved and could be in two parts. The first may be (depending on the grant) is to write an LOI then if you are selected as we were, a full proposal.

Why are you funding government entities? You are funding County government departments who have the ability to levy and passing up non-profits who don't. You should rethink this.
The process is precise and the response is timely. They evidently fund government projects so if you are a government entity your are in luck.
Communication is timely.

This is a great foundation. We were approached at a conference to talk about one of our projects, submitted a proposal and it's been a great relationship. They are flexible and willing to let us design a program that works for our local needs and gaps.

Not only did their program officers make themselves available during the process, host forums for asking questions, and thoroughly explain their priorities and why they chose them, they also built in opportunities for feedback after decisions had been made, so organizations could learn from the experience.

This funder clearly has a long-term vision and is addressing the issues around housing in clear, thoughtful steps.
Maintain your commitment to the issues you've taken on, do not let personal favoritism take away from your ability to deliver on your intent.
This funder builds relationships extremely well. They clearly care about the work of the community, whether they fund your agency or not.

Thank you for being specific in describing what you will NOT fund. And thank you for being open to a variety of possibilities about what you will fund.
The “grant opportunities” section of Pohlad Family Foundation website is packed with research links that help the applicants build effective programs. Even if you aren’t funded, the resources will be valuable additions to your fund of knowledge.

This is a new focus for them and I really like that someone is trying to fund programs that help people before they are homeless, to help prevent it from happening. That investment has the potential to help people longer-term.
