Review the foundation guidelines and try to call/meet with the program officer prior to submitting a request. They are very open to having an initial conversation about organizational fit with their priorities. They are currently going through strategic planning so their priorities may change. Most recently, they have been focusing on youth.

All the Foundation staff we have interacted with over the years have been very responsive, proactive, friendly, and helpful. They are easy to get ahold of either through phone or email.
Good
In the grantee portal, we often have to update our organizational profile more than once a year since we apply for multiple grants from the Foundation. The profile is very detailed and can feel like a separate application. It would be nice if we only had to submit this once a year.
We appreciate their efforts to gather feedback/input from grantees. Also, the Foundation feels more like a partner in the community, rather than just a funding resource. They are active in community conversations around youth development, post-secondary education, and employment readiness.

Yes - we do encourage connecting with Foundation staff to explore potential fit with funding opportunities posted on our website. More information about our new strategic focus will be posted on our website in early 2018.

A very responsive funder, but currently wrapping up a planning process that may change the Foundation's priorities. No information about new guidelines likely until late summer 2017.

This funder gives to many orgs in the Twin Cities, which is becoming increasingly rare. While the narrowing of focus of many foundations makes for bigger gifts to a few, it's valuable to be an inch wide and a mile deep when there are so many great organizations in our community.
Follow through on communicated goals, timely communication, supportive of organizational needs.
Thank you for your review! Yes - we are in a strategic planning process that has gone a bit longer than we initially thought - but we are excited to finalize and share more about our focus in early 2018.

Keep doing site visits and listening to client stories. Continue to make evaluation relavant and easy.
What will your new focus areas be?
They do more than provide funding support. They help connect grantees to other resources, each other, and always open to listening.
Thank you for your feedback - it is a gift. Yes - we encourage reading our guidelines and materials online before seeking support. Our materials can help potential grantees gauge fit and if a formal application should be submitted. A call with a Program Officer can help if you still have questions after reviewing materials.

The online proposal was clear. I had a few technical glitches with the website. Staff were very responsive and helpful. My sense of the current grant cycle and past funding is that Pohlad has a genuine interest in supporting the community. Their focus areas are clear and straightforward.

Site visits or other forms of in-person contact would be welcome.
My experience with the online portal was that you could not change answers without both appearing in the print version. They were kind enough to manually correct this.
The foundation ensures that children who are at risk have the ability to attend summer camps.
Thank you for your review and feedback on our online grants management system. We have had to work out some kinks in the past - but are definitely available for technical assistance when working through an online application. We will also be looking for ways to streamline applications in 2018 - so stay tuned!
