United Way's application is complex. If you do not have experience responding to RFP's of this magnitude you will need to contact them for assistance likely more than once. Definitely vet your program with them for alignment before making the investment in time required by the application.

Given the extensive time commitment to write a proposal for a United Way RFP, please consider the published deadlines of other funders and the timing of future RFP's. There are many, many year-end reports that many non-profits must complete by 12/31 and at least 4 deadlines of major funders on January 8th and 9th. Also, most non-profit staff are out of the office between Christmas and New Years. Even if the grant writer had on planned on working between the holidays there are no staff in the office to review drafts or answer questions. More to the point, there are countless grantwriters this year who had not planned on working between the holidays and feel that United Way has pretty much ruined their holiday. Choosing a due date such as 1/31 in future would be greatly appreciated.
Does your work align with the required United Way metrics? If not, you won't be successful. Does the amount of funds you are likely to secure justify the length of time to do the application? United Way is giving grants for far fewer dollars than they used to but their application is not that much quicker to complete than previous years.
They understand the issues and theory of change.

Be wary of the United Way. They expect grantees to have a handle on finances, be fiscally sound and well managed, and yet their business model is clearly not working. I feel like our organization got caught in their inability to navigate their own business model.
Inadvertently exerts negative influence in the field, Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Bureaucratic, Risk averse

Sudden cuts to nonprofits doing good work cur violence and seed safety is short sighted. Maybe ending domestic violence and increasing safety for vulnerable folks is not a goal nay more.
Don't promise r pledge funds you cannot raise.
We were funded and pledged future funding. Future payments were cancelled without warning jeopardizing programs and impacting the organization as a whole.
