Hugh J. Andersen is a favorite funder - staff is approachable and friendly and they fund general operating grants. This was my second year applying, and I found that the application questions and process to be simple enough. I'd recommend getting an early start because you have to mail the packet in!

Hugh J. Andersen Foundation is one of my favorites (I know you're not supposed to have favorites but I do). They are consistent funders, get the field, and know what their board is likely to fund. Love them.

Their program officer responds to emails quickly and comes to community events.
Good
They know what impact they want to make and fund the relevant orgs, often for multiple years ongoing. Only change would be to make multi-year pledges, since it's incredibly reliable funding.
Very geographically specific - don't even try if you're not in the St. Croix River Valley or the East Metro/St. Paul.
The grant application is useful to repurpose from/for other funders.

The Philanthropy Director at Hugh J. Andersen Foundation is extremely helpful, accessible, and straight-forward; you will know, after a quick phone call or email, whether your program is a good fit for the foundation and how much to request.

The foundation staff are easy to communicate with and have a sincere interest in the community as a whole. I would suggest calling them before preparing a proposal to get their advice and counsel on options for funding - they will be transparent with you about the foundation's interest in the project.

This is a highly-effective foundation that is moving the needle in terms of improving the communities it serves. They are proactive in identifying needs in the community and have a talented staff team that models how successful foundations should communicate with nonprofit leaders.
You are doing great work in the community. Please remember that non-profits sometimes have unexpected needs or emergencies that arise, and the sign of an excellent foundation is one that has the ability to help out in those situations, too. We value the incredible impact you are making, and appreciate how kind you are to the staff of our non-profit.
I really appreciate the approachability of the foundation staff... everyone is easy to work with and is caring about those they serve.

The Foundation has a wide-variety of interest areas, but likes projects/programs focused on the east metro. Connect with program officer before applying to ensure fit. They accept MN Common Grant proposal format, but also have their own cover sheet and application checklist/attachments. Submit early - they are in Bayport, MN.
