If you don't need the $1000, the process they put you through for the money is completely not worth it. Spend the time on creating a crowdfunding campaign and getting donors who will stick with you. This funder is also only a one time grant so it is exhausting to create relationships with them only to get $1000 one time.

Professional in the field

The amount of hoops they make you jump through for a $1000 grant is pretty ridiculous. They don't give you more than one grant, so it is literally all that work and relationship building for $1000 max. So spend your time and energy on a foundation or on donors who will partner with you over the long term.

Pros

Gives more than money

This is a very transparent funder looking to fund seed stage projects. They have a very warm, but often very overworked, staff and their staff has limited impact on what gets selected. After the initial review process by the staff, portfolios of grants are sent to external reviewers with experience in the field to rank.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Risk taker, Friendly, Builds relationships, Openminded

This is one of the most open application processes in the foundation world, and The Pollination Project is a funder who looks at early stage projects that no one else in this field would even consider.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Gives more than money, Risk taker, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, Builds relationships, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded, Responsive

Thank you so much for the review and it is really helpful to us to know that more intros to other foundations would be useful to you. We are working on this and do sometimes have good follow up funders for certain grantees- but the more we have, the more it supports our network.

The Pollination Project is one of the few funders which will help new nonprofits get started. The grant is only $1,000 but it's a base. They are interested in broad range of issues, but enthusiastically fund environmental projects. There is a requirement that you use renewable sources, organic foods, etc. if that is included in your proposal. We needed to source a caterer that provided organic food and recyclable serving utensils. If you have questions, they are responsive and will help you meet your deliverables.

Really look around the non profit world and see if you can find any alternatives for funding. Are the startup costs for a 501 worth it?i.e. Incorporation, attorney, accountant are just the start. The Pollination Project is really the easiest and best in helping start ups.
