Their grant portal is user-friendly, with clear questions, word count recommendations (as opposed to strict adherence to word limits). They don't fixate on finances, but rather impact and inclusion, which is reflected in their flexible and simple finance documentation requirements. I appreciate the DEIA focus across all application questions and really liked that you can request gen-op and event support in one application. As new events are created, I would love to better understand if ad-hoc event support would be considered or if it must be submitted in our annual application. I wish there was an easier way to change profile names given nonprofit attrition.

They focus on equity and inclusion and the application reflects these goals. Additionally, the clarity of the question illustrates the care with which they approach their goals.
I would love to see a simple way to change profile names or a link in the portal on how to update the information, if it is available. The application process is so streamlined and clear- it is much appreciated!
The Weitz Family Foundation is approachable and cares deeply about our community.
I am reporting on our recent submission, so I do not have the results of our submission yet. In the past, we have been funded at the requested amount.
Weitz Family Foundation does a great job of connecting grantees with one another and with other resources in the community.

The Weitz Family Foundation is willing to invest in work that fosters DEI and systemic change work. And that is unusual in the funding community. As such, the requests for funding greatly exceeds their available funding. I am grateful to the WFF for their vision and values. Maybe they could try to build the capacity of other foundations around this work?!

However, I have a long established relationship with this foundation and I am sure that makes a difference.

A number of important nonprofits exist because of initial funding from the WFF. Other funders are often reluctant to invest in start-ups so having the Weitz's backing has helped smaller nonprofits access new funding opportunities.
To create systemic change, funding needs to be more focused on a specific issue. Which is probably why most funders don't invest in it. What would significant social issues look like if foundations came together to fund one social issue for an extended time period?
They have recently added policy to their work which is a great move. Anything that can be done to prevent problems in the first place is a great investment of funds and in the community. I hope they carry on their good work for many years to come! Thanks Weitz Family Foundation!
They understand the grind of nonprofit work and they are very supportive and encouraging....who else throws a party/celebration of nonprofit work every year?

I suggest getting to know the funder's mission. If you think it aligns with your mission, then it's a good chance you can work together toward the end goal. Our's is the community.

I like how easy was to complete the grant application, so I hope that the Foundation will continue to use the current grant application format.
Great staff, works well with the community. They don't just provide funding to organizations they care about the people and communities they serve.
The Weitz Family Foundation communicates very effectively with its grant applicants and the community.

This foundation is so willing to build relationships so please don't be afraid to reach out to their staff. They are open to statewide work if you can make the case for improvements within their home base city.

Weitz foundation understands the value of unrestricted general operating funds which isn't always the case with foundations. I really appreciate the support of our overall work without the necessity to keep making up "new" programs for them to fund... We are being thoughtfully innovative and doing new things but with less pressure and less stress in the grant application process. THANK YOU!

Check the application as it exists in the portal--the 2023 application template was missing questions that were required in the portal, which made what you thought was the "end" of the process a little more stressful.

This grant application is explicitly interested in racial equity and accessibility. But the app itself didn't seem especially accessible (template was inaccurate and sometimes unclear because of formatting issues; portal routinely cut information during copy/paste). It also seems to be very white-centered. In other words, despite wanting to increase racial equity, the application itself seemed to assume a white-led organization that isn't very advanced in the DEI realm. Orgs that are led by people of color and whose entire mission is devoted to racial/ethnic equity found it difficult to understand where they fit in to the funder's interests.
This application is not like others you will write. It is philosophical and abstract--in a good way. If you let it, it can help you improve your overall approach.
This foundation really *wants* to do and be better, and they make tremendous effort to do so compared to their peers in Omaha. It's also very clear that they strive to ask meaningful questions.
