I suggest getting to know the funder's mission. If you think it aligns with your mission, then it's a good chance you can work together toward the end goal. Our's is the community.

I like how easy was to complete the grant application, so I hope that the Foundation will continue to use the current grant application format.
Great staff, works well with the community. They don't just provide funding to organizations they care about the people and communities they serve.
The Weitz Family Foundation communicates very effectively with its grant applicants and the community.

Weitz foundation understands the value of unrestricted general operating funds which isn't always the case with foundations. I really appreciate the support of our overall work without the necessity to keep making up "new" programs for them to fund... We are being thoughtfully innovative and doing new things but with less pressure and less stress in the grant application process. THANK YOU!

Check the application as it exists in the portal--the 2023 application template was missing questions that were required in the portal, which made what you thought was the "end" of the process a little more stressful.

This grant application is explicitly interested in racial equity and accessibility. But the app itself didn't seem especially accessible (template was inaccurate and sometimes unclear because of formatting issues; portal routinely cut information during copy/paste). It also seems to be very white-centered. In other words, despite wanting to increase racial equity, the application itself seemed to assume a white-led organization that isn't very advanced in the DEI realm. Orgs that are led by people of color and whose entire mission is devoted to racial/ethnic equity found it difficult to understand where they fit in to the funder's interests.
This application is not like others you will write. It is philosophical and abstract--in a good way. If you let it, it can help you improve your overall approach.
This foundation really *wants* to do and be better, and they make tremendous effort to do so compared to their peers in Omaha. It's also very clear that they strive to ask meaningful questions.

I am a newbie to foundationland. I didn't know the application process. I didn't even know there *was* an application process.
The WFF Executive Director was approachable and invested. She immediately understood our mission, and even helped me crystallize some things in my head.
I'd recommend trying to meet with someone from the family, if possible, or any of their amazingly available staff.

I tend to think foundations are full of busy people who don't want to worry about the ins and outs of day-to-day issues. I think that's probably incorrect. Everyone at WFF is passionate about what they fund. They want to hear how things are going.
Good
WFF has been leaning hard into racial equity. It comes up in the training programs they offer and is a major part of the application. They are thinking about the problem holistically and it just warms my cold black heart.
I'd like a little more clarity on the role of the program managers.
Approachable. Honest. Transparent. Investing with purpose.
