I would suggest a thorough read-through of the information provided on their website. They have taken the time to put together a clear and easy to manage site, that will most likely answer all of your questions. Just know that the culture of the individuals involved in this Foundation is one of collaboration. They want you to succeed and will help those unfamiliar with the process to do so.

The Foundation has gone above and beyond my needs, and have been there every step of the way with assistance. My relationship with certain members of the Foundation is unique. They are the most accessible group that I've ever dealt with and have actually passed on information that has helped me navigate the funding world in general.
Good
They have consistently championed organizations like ours, grass roots, visionary organizations that invest in helping develop the awareness of the community. While considering the physical needs of neighborhoods, they also invest in building leaders in communities that can assist with transforming lives on a higher level.
It seems one of the major strengths this funder possesses, is being able to identify organizations that have integrity, that are driven to improve their surroundings with their services, and can have the most impact in marginalized communities. I would advise that they consider capacity building assistance again, and direct that assistance towards those organizations.
This funder sees the visions easily, and quickly trusts that when properly executed, your efforts will result in good. They do not impose an agenda on the organizations they help. If you lay out your plan, and its a plan that helps people, they will most likely support you, so be ready.
There are many things this funder does well, but ultimately, making the application process easy is something they do better than most.

Be prepared with what you want from the funder. Have a good idea of the funder's interest by visiting the funders website. Review the websites of the organizations that have been funded. Have a good written summary of what and why with numbers to support it. Be sure that it is something that you are passionate about and have the documentation to support it: impact stories, numbers, etc.

Funding priorities have changed so I do not have any advice as to how to secure funding at this time. A meeting is always good but no guarantee that you will receive funds.

E-mail is the best way to contact as phone messages are not always returned.

Somewhat confused as to how its philanthropic goals do not equate to how funding is awarded
Be honest about the direction you are going so that time is not spent submitting applications that have no change of being funded. Just post those on your website as soon as the decision is made.
Spend time building a relationship with them if you fit their priorities

It's helpful to get to know family members to understand their priorities as a foundation, and how your mission and proposal would fit.

Continue to provide general operating grants to grantees and consider multi-year requests. That flexibility and continuity is enormously helpful! (And keep the streamlined proposals!)
They ask tough but fair questions about how projects work and whether that's the best approach to achieve a goal. They're great at seeing connections between their grantees and connecting people working on similar things. They're also open to providing general operating grants, which is critical for nonprofits to have maximum flexibility to carry out their mission.

They have been interested in learning about and funding new organizations where they can make a significant impact. You might be less likely to receive funding if you are a large institution that they haven't supported in the past.

They are wonderful!
The Weitz Family is extraordinarily knowledgeable and engaged in the nonprofit world. They are involved in the organizations they fund, they care about data and impact, and they understand that general operating funding and easy grant application processes make our jobs as administrators easier and allow us to focus on the programmatic work.

Appreciate commitment to systemic injustices which influence poverty.
Thanks for understanding that the work of grassroots non profits is important, and that stand alone grassroots nonprofits, especially, struggle with fluxuations in grants each year.
Communication. Limited experience, but communication from foundation very helpful.

Interactions with the foundation have always been prompt and positive. We would love to be able to meet in person with a staff member. Face to face meetings are always more productive and informative.

One piece of advise would be to have one meeting a year with your potential grantees.
They are responsive to making our community a better place to live. They are very open to new ideas and addressing current issues.
