This foundation want to address the root cause of poverty and works with grass roots organization which is essential because it is the people living in poverty who know best how to lift our communities up.
Consider working closely with Indigenous Peoples Organizations! Historically, Indigenous Peoples have been marginalized. According to First Peoples Worldwide; only 1% of funds raised in the name of Indigenous Peoples go to benefit Indigenous Peoples; this means that 99% of funds given to benefit indigenous peoples go to operating funds for non-indigenous peoples organizations claiming to help indigenous peoples. Please see the guide to granters on how t work with Indigenous Peoples Organizations. https://internationalfunders.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Grantmakers-Guide-updated-2014.pdf
The process seems simple but Organizations approaching should have a clear mission and vision for their organization. While the application process is simple; it is still very competitive.
Work with grass roots organizations. Give grass roots organization an opportunity to organize and strengthen organizational infrastructure. It is one of the very few foundations that will openly support operational funding. Operational funding (core mission fund) are the hardest to get and yet very essential to grass roots organizations.

The Weitz Family Foundation is fairly straightforward in what they will fund. If you happen to know one of the officers, you could call and ask if your project fits into their scope. They genuinely want to help nonprofits in Omaha be the best that they can be, and help their intended clients.

We developed a relationship long before we applied. We invited them to our facility, met our staff, shared our vision and volunteered with activities the foundation was hosting. Everyone came to know each other very well.

Carefully review the foundation's priorities. The staff is very easy to work with. Arrange a tour. The founders have an interest in social determinants due to a social work background. They are very culturally aware, not racist, not homophobic.

Please review what other funders with similar demographics are doing in communities similar to Omaha. Look at programs funded to address the impact of gentrification, poverty and high unemployment.
I believe Barbara Weitz's background as a social worker may be responsible for the compassion she has that impacts her giving.
The funder accepted our invitation to tour our facility. We wanted them to understand why we need housing and a larger facility. They met with the staff. They appeared to be genuinely interested in our constituents and their needs.
