Unfortunately, we are not sure what FESS refers to. We have no application deadlines; organizations who wish to apply can submit an LOI at any time via our e-grant system. Organizations can apply as often as every year. More information, along with staff contact information, can be found on our website (www.medinafoundation.org). If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out directly, and staff will be happy to answer any questions.

Since The Medina Foundation understands the importance of unrestricted funds, who can write your grant to reflect all of your programs and services and how they are integrated to serve the communities need. It is a very holistic approach and a huge relief that they get the big picture of how non-profits work.

If I have a question during the application process I know they will answer my email within 48 hours, we know we will have a site visit where we can share additional information and ask them questions as well.

While we have been funded by the Foundation for years, they will occasionally have a special grant available that we are not awarded because they are making special effort to serve rural or more isolated communities. They stick to their guidelines in order to accomplish their goals and don't play favorites, as far as I can tell!
Thank you for unrestricted funding!
They have a grant application process that is lengthy; starting with an LOI, then full application, then site visit, then award. The up-shot is, the process between grant award, report, re-application takes 18 months resulting in no funding every third calendar year. This is something to remember when setting your annual budget.
We can count on having a relaxed and in-depth site visit with a program officer who knows us well and remembers everything from the last visit too! They are also disciplined in keeping their funding steady and generous, while still trying to spread their resources to include new organizations, quite a juggling act.

Staff are very accessible and actually welcome your questions. Review guidelines even if you've applied before; they seem to change fairly often.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback! We do recommend reviewing guidelines on our website (www.medinafoundation.org) prior to applying, and also contacting us with any questions. Our overall guidelines have remained the same for many years, although specific priorities within each issue area are subject to change as we respond to the needs of the community.

They are one of the few who vigorously welcome general operating requests, but your ducks need to be in order, in terms of financial clarity...budgets, etc, and why this project is a priority for your organization and for the greater good (community, youth, humanity) .

This foundation understands the importance of funding general operations, so there is no need to engineer the request to make it about a specific project.

Please seek out avenues for providing additional leadership to the philanthropic community, particularly smaller family foundations that don't have the same progressive approach to grant making.
The application process is the "right size" - long enough to provide a compelling amount of detail, short enough not to be onerous.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback! We appreciate your advice about providing leadership to the philanthropic community. Our staff works hard to advocate for best practices in philanthropy by speaking on panels, writing blog posts, and participating in funder collaboratives.

Ensure you have Board engagement in the development and application process. Metrics should be solid, with a strong logic model.

Perhaps make annual, sustainable funding an opportunity for high performing organizations.
Take time to learn about the organization, engage volunteer leadership, and request feedback. They listen to honesty in struggles, and seem more interested in your ability to learn from a challenge and grow, then historical elements.

We appreciate your feedback. Our application is designed to provide our staff and board with enough data to make an informed decision, ideally without being overly cumbersome or requiring information that won’t be used. We don’t require specific metrics or dictate what data needs to be collected, because the organizations we fund work in such widely differing capacities and through varying programs and strategies. However, we do ask organizations how they define and measure their success, and what results they see. While we do occasionally make strategic multi-year grants and recognize the importance of such funding, the fluctuation of our endowment and our interest in making sure we have funding available for new and emerging needs make it challenging for us to commit too much of our funding in advance.

This funder was incredibly kind and gracious throughout the grant process. During the site visit, we were able to have A productive, casual discussion on the needs of our community. I felt like they were genuinely interested.
