Weingart Foundation professes to be forward-thinking, but isn't. Moving into an invitation-only model, dropping recent grantees without explanation, while giving them the run-around as they're trying to figure out where a previously solid relationship went wrong. (Ghosting philanthropy-style!) As with all funders, important to recognize the ones that are actually practicing what they preach about valuing sustainability, building true partnerships, and being transparent, especially during this time. Weingart is not.

Be better. Provide transparency to grantees about why you suddenly decided to stop funding them. Hire program officers who have significant experience in nonprofit management and/or fundraising. Stop changing your funding strategies on a whim - organizations and the communities they support are on the line.
After having been a grantee for years, did not receive funding for an unknown reason, despite inquiring several times.

The Foundation changed its funding priorities several years ago and is now very narrowly focused on what they will fund. Under their equity lens, they are only interested in programs that will empower low-income individuals from underserved communities to be more successful.

They are always willing to answer phone calls and emails and discuss potential projects. They also make frequent appearances on meet the funders panels.

While I know they feel very strongly about the equity issue and are convincing many of their peers to take the same funding approach, I dislike this trend of foundations setting the agenda for nonprofits. I wish they were more responsive to what the nonprofits in our community are really facing and what our needs are.

Not very easy to get them on the phone or to answer an email, but they're very nice when you talk to them.
Good
They are addressing critical, urgent community needs all rooted in poverty and income inequality. IMO that's a good thing.
Keep doing what you're doing. Maybe we weren't a fit but there is a lot of need and you are very focused.
Not funded, and we were told we are not providing enough for low income areas.
They are leading the charge to fund general operating costs, and we wish more funders would follow suit.

Unsure.
Smaller nonprofits who are providing direct services and who are interacting with hard-to-reach populations must be considered as a priority to accomplish the overall goal of all funders who are interested in making greater change in communities with higher risks of diseases, late stage diseases and who are marginalized through social issues beyond folks control.

Keep funding general support. It’s important and few others do.
Communicates and makes general funding accessible.

Like most foundations, they are up to their eyeballs in applicants, and they push you (HARD) to get through the first doors. It's worth it, as once you get through, you've passed their muster, and they consider you worthy of ongoing support. Plus, they are interested in making general op grants, which are the best, and rarest grants in our field.
