They've been a little inconsistent in what they wanted us to do. We had to pull one application at their request and then submit another. That's pretty rare - you should know where the funder's head is before hitting the button.

Pros

Builds relationships

Like with many corporate funders, so much depends on having a Board member who is an executive with Wells Fargo to get sufficient attention to have your request seriously considered.

It is difficult to get funded even with a connection and as a past grantee.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The feedback you get will be realistic, which lets you make a sound decision on whether to apply or not. We were turned down in the past. Was told a capital request was a long shot and still do a program request even though we had a capital request pending review. We got the capital with no employee involvement or bank connection.

Our Program Officer really takes the time to understand our strategic vision. Grantees should be prepared to articulate their goals over the next few years. They actively encourage collaboration among grantees within their portfolio. Great support, great communicators and a key partner in our success.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Gives more than money, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, Builds relationships, Likes site visits, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded, Responsive

Personal contact. Cultivate the relationship. Get representative to visit and tour your facility. What makes your organization special that WFF would want to fund you? How might you collaborate with Wells Fargo team members going forward?

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Gives more than money, Culturally sensitive, Friendly, "Gets" nonprofits and issues

We were basically told that unless we had someone from the bank on our board, we wouldn't get funded, even though we align with their funding criteria.

Cons

Bureaucratic

Wells Fargo Foundation application asks redundant questions, is bureaucratic, and doesn't offer a format for the nonprofit to express its mission how it accomplishes meeting that mission.
Even though we have been funded for three years in a row, we have had zero contact with an actual person at the Foundation.

Cons

Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Bureaucratic

I work with a number of nonprofit clients and it is not unusual to receive no response from this foundation (Los Angeles office). This can be frustrating after spending the time to complete the application.
