I've had excellent thoughtful talks with the Fund Advisor over the last decade.
Good
This funder has cared deeply about good journalism on environmental and social justice issues.
Keep hiring great staff/fund advisors.
This funder understands that journalists need to be independent, and need resources in order to plan ahead. The funder also doesn't try to dictate to journalists what their work should be.

The Kendeda Fund is an exemplary funder. Accessible, flexible and generous. We had a great field tour with several Kendeda Fund members, and this helped build the relationship. Highly recommended.

Very success if not stretched thin supporting a diversity of good causes. Working in Montana, we are limited with philanthropic support, and we appreciate the Kendeda Fund's interest in our communities and landscapes.
Good
Our work with the Kendeda Fund is focused on rural economic development. This is a large lift, and we should all be focused on leveraging private and public funding in order to support more rural development, and sustain support into the future.
Focus on leveraging private funding with public funding.
Flexibility, a willingness to engage in multiple causes, and working to bring in more philanthropy to Montana.

I think you need to demonstrate that you are doing good work through support from your community and individual donors before you approach the grantor. Be a good partner to other groups that Kendeda supports.

Very accessible. I believe that Kendeda believes in supporting our organization by empowering people to do more/better work.
Good
Fund more people/organizations that are effective at the local level.
Kendeda supports partnerships and encourages like-minded groups to support one another and work together. They fund organizations that are doing good work to do more and increase capacity, they don't try to drive an agenda.

More than any other foundation I have worked with Kendeda Fund focuses on genuine personal relationships between their fund advisors and the organizations in their portfolios. They take the time to learn about you, your staff, your mission, and the challenges you face in delivering on that mission.
More than most they want to help you as an organization solve problems, and encourage open and honest dialogue.

Our fund advisor is second to none. He is accessible, thoughtful, direct, and completely transparent.

Kendeda Fund is truly the best funder I have had the pleasure to work with. What sets Kendeda Fund apart in my mind is their collaborative approach to giving. There are a lot of foundations that grant money, but Kendeda Fund invests. When you work with Kendeda Fund you gain something much more valuable than their financial support. You gain a true partner that is wholly invested in the success of your mission, your organization, and your team.
Kendeda is incredibly thoughtful in their approach to giving. They create real relationships with organizations and immerse themselves in understanding the issues that they support.

Please keep up the great work - from who you fund to the ease of your application and reporting.
If your mission doesn't fall under what Kendeda is interested in, think before you apply.

Many one-on-one meetings with foundation staff make it easy to understand their top priorities and to find projects that are a good fit. There is nothing better than good conversations; we learn a lot from each other.

Keep up the close one-on-one relationship with grantees. We're not always seeking funding; we also view you as colleagues and value your insight and strategic thinking.
Multiyear general support funding! My oh my. Is there anything more effective at building strong non-profits? I don't think so!
They stay in close touch with the issues of the day and are able to adapt. I fear too many funders are stuck in a strategic plan that no longer makes sense after the last election.

It is great to meet with the fund advisor in person to get input about what Kendeda likes to and is likely to fund. He is very open, honest, and responsive.

The Kendeda Fund people were a real pleasure to work with. They quickly grasped the goals for the programs we have in place and the need for new programs that we have in development. Contact and introduce yourself to the person responsible for your region or type of program. Arrange a face-to-face meeting and be prepared to present a succinct, well thought out overview of your operation and specific needs.

Continue to develop an ongoing rapport with grantees; have lunch together, etc. and further develop your understanding of how "things are going." Don't wait until the end of the grant period to ask how things went.
Kendeda is a productive partner.
They get focused on the issues/needs in a hurry and develop an understanding of the opportunities to implement solutions to challenges.
