It's probably best to have a personal conversation early on (in our case it was with the Fund Advisor). It was that personal conversation that clarified a shared intention that made all other steps look and feel easy.

I think it does. but thats because the kendeda purpose is articulated in a soft way: "exploring how to ..."
If the purpose statement were more daring, the answer might have been different. Basically, the moment we live in calls for deeper impact on transforming systems...
Think about the systemic impact that you might have in the current moment of disruption--in America and beyond. You already fund various key 'elements.' But what is the whole that keeps the whole thing together? What would be a bold initiative that many of the current grantees could be part of?
Very direct and non-bureaucratic. human presence driven.
My experience is very limited. But our Fund Advisor was exceptionally competent and aware. She also embodied the spirit of servant leadership. a rare experience in the world of philanthropy.

This funder is incredibly supportive without being overly demanding about the details of a program. Our relationship with them has been ongoing, as a thought-partner and more. I really appreciate the authentic relationships they develop and how they provide support without pushing the organization's work in a direction that feels counter to the mission.

The Kendeda Fund is spending down the majority of its funds by 2024, so it’s unclear whether they are adding any new grantees at this time. They care a lot about child marriage in Southeast Asia and that largely guides all of their philanthropy. They are easy to work with.

Once you have a relationship with them, they are accessible. The first step of getting in touch with them can be tricky as they like to operate under the radar.
To give general operating support, and to be more open to fitting their support within organizations' existing theories of change.
This is family foundation with limited staff who work remotely from all across the United States. As a result, interaction with the foundation is less formal and more personal, and doesn’t adhere to a very strict bureaucratic process, i.e. lots of program officers and directors and documentation required. This is very nice because it allows a more flexible and informal relationship between the fund and its grantees, but could be frustrating for people who are trying to get in touch with them to inquire about funding opportunities.
Kendeda Fund’s goal is to reduce rates of child marriage. To achieve this goal, they have certainly chosen the right philanthropic partners and appear to have saturated the market of groups working on this issue. It’s harder for us to say whether they have actually achieved a reduction in rates of child marriage, though overall rates of child marriage are slowly declining, particularly in South Asia, according to UNICEF, and surely the Kendeda Fund’s support is part of that.
Kendeda Fund builds a nice relationship with its grantees and seems to take a genuine interest in their work and truly wants to be helpful and supportive. They really dig in to the work and seek to understand their grantees. The fund also understands the importance of internal capacity building, not just external programming, which has been hugely helpful for us as we seek to improve our internal operations in order to support our growing programs.

It is best to have a meeting with you main point of contact prior to applying. This will enable you to understand their budget and priorities in order to submit a proposal that is as relevant as possible.
