Advice from a Friend

Mary’s Pence

Feb 06, 2020

Grant Applicant - applied in 2019

Mary's Pence is the most woman-focused funder we have encountered. They address social justice issues with none of the rigidity of other funders in that arena. Their approach is simple, logical and well-organized. They are incredibly accessible and supportive in their interactions with applicants but also in their funding processes. They listen carefully and they are responsive.
We are a very small, fiscally-sponsored agency and we have received about 6 foundation grants per year over the past decade. Our experience with Mary's Pence is the best we have had with any funder.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Gives more than money, Risk taker, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, Builds relationships, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded, Responsive

Our organizations became aware of the grant opportunity through the outreach of one of the board members. Our advice would be to contact one of the board members to begin the grant conversation.

Pros

Culturally sensitive, Friendly, Builds relationships, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Responsive

Mary's Pence encourages early submission of grant applications and they are willing to give feedback on the narrative. I highly recommend an early submission. I did this and got good feedback. Even if the organization does not receive a grant from Mary's Pence, the feedback helps us write stronger narratives.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Responsive

Make sure to read the guidelines and confirm that you fit the criteria; be prepared to put in some hours as questions were very specific.

You have to have a program that supports women in the U.S. Although we were told we could reapply for a program in Haiti, they did not fund us in 2018 or 2019.

Thank you for your feedback. Mary's Pence funds organizations that are based and operate in the U.S. and Canada. We used to fund organizations outside the U.S. and Canada and when we changed this several years ago we "grandmothered" in previous grantees who wanted to reapply for funding. Although we invited this organization to reapply, we did not end up funding them because their program did not meet our social change criteria.
