Mary’s Pence

Mary's Pence encourages early submission of grant applications and they are willing to give feedback on the narrative. I highly recommend an early submission. I did this and got good feedback. Even if the organization does not receive a grant from Mary's Pence, the feedback helps us write stronger narratives.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Responsive

Make sure to read the guidelines and confirm that you fit the criteria; be prepared to put in some hours as questions were very specific.

Thanks for your feedback. Our grant application includes specific questions that pertain to why the proposal fits Mary's Pence criteria. The guideline for the 5 questions that we ask in the narrative section is that they be answered within two pages. We appreciate the time applicants take to describe their projects.

You have to have a program that supports women in the U.S. Although we were told we could reapply for a program in Haiti, they did not fund us in 2018 or 2019.

Thank you for your feedback. Mary's Pence funds organizations that are based and operate in the U.S. and Canada. We used to fund organizations outside the U.S. and Canada and when we changed this several years ago we "grandmothered" in previous grantees who wanted to reapply for funding. Although we invited this organization to reapply, we did not end up funding them because their program did not meet our social change criteria.

Be sure that your grant request is specifically designated to benefit women and primarily women of color. If your grant is requesting funding for a project or program of a larger organization with multiple projects, it would be wise to separate your project's budget (at least on paper) so that your specific projects will have a small enough budget to be considered. In our case our program funding is separated from the budget of the larger organization. If the larger organization were requesting the funds, Mary's Pence would not have granted us the funds for our small leadership project.

Thank you for your feedback. Mary’s Pence funds women led projects that are inclusive of all women who are working on issues that marginalize women. Currently we fund organizations with budgets under $200,000. If an organization is under that limit, but is not a 501(c)3, a fiscal sponsor can be helpful but is not required. If you do have a fiscal sponsor we seek clarity about the relationship to ensure that we are not directly funding organizations larger than our criteria limit. The size of the fiscal sponsor is not considered, provided the relationship is clear. The organization budget and project budget of the organization doing the work, helps us understand how the funds will be used. We are happy to talk about your specific situation ahead of an application process if it is helpful.

Attend the grantmaker's information session. It's a great way to figure out what their goals are, past recipients, etc. I also had a chance to meet the Executive Director, made a personal connection and had one:one time to explain to our work. It was a great conversation and solidified that we were a fit to apply.

Pros

Gives more than money, Culturally sensitive, Friendly, Responsive
