We were fortunate to receive funding as a Springboard recipient. Their support continued over the next 10 years where they still serve as my "guiding light" in any needed area. I received a "mentor" along with the funding and that was invaluable! The Durfee Foundation genuinely cares about the people they support.

They are wonderful people who have "heart" and truly want to help you make the most positive difference that is possible. They are always available and responsive. If you're fortunate to receive a grant from them, they will support you forever!
This funder is the "gift that keeps on giving!" They funded our organization around 2006 but have enabled us to remain part of their "family." They continue to support us in a variety of ways beyond the initial grant. They truly become a friend to you!

Durfee runs a special sabbatical program and while there is a bit of anticipation anxiety built in -- you really want it and you really need it -- they process in very reassuring. The program team is thorough with your application and they do interview your references and they do ask probing questions.. particularly around your readiness and capacity to take full advantage of the program. They are interested in you... and want to ensure that you will get maximum benefit from the sabbatical. After the grant award they work with you so that you stay true to your personal goals and do build the support systems around you to achieve them.

Durfee is not your average foundation - they will absolutely consider out-of-the-box ideas and, in fact, look for them! One important thing to know, however, is that Durfee invests in people. When they consider your funding request, they're considering whether they want you to be a part of the Durfee family. Durfee supports grantees throughout the duration of their career in varying ways. They will continue supporting you when/if you leave your current role, so make sure to emphasize your skills and dedication to the field you're in as a whole, and not just your specific idea.

Durfee wants to strengthen the nonprofit sector in Los Angeles County, and I believe they're doing it. They support the livelihood of nonprofit entrepreneurs as well as those that they serve.
It can be difficult to get feedback or set up an opportunity to touch base with staff, because they are so busy. This is one thing I would love to see improve.
Durfee is very hands-off. They have faith in grantees to perform well, and they respect the creative process in nonprofit work.

The Durfee Foundation fills an important niche - the support of Executive Directors and their top managerial staff. They provide sabbaticals and research opportunities to avoid burnout, and continuing education and peer support to Executive Directors after the sabbatical. I could not recommend them more highly.

This foundation really wants you to succeed, so much so, that they additionally funded a non profit mentor who guided us through the ins and outs of the non profit maze. They are always accessible , even years later. Of all my grants received over the last 15 years, it was the most positive experience.

The foundation looks for the uniqueness in a project, something outside of the box, and makes every effort to support that project so it is successful. They also introduced us to their other projects so there was mutual support among us. Their chosen projects have staying power.
Keep up the good work!
As with any funder, know your project well. Be open to the support that you are given from the funder, and think outside of the box!
The difference between this grant and all of the others is that the Durfee Foundation understands the needs of new non profits and puts their support in measures that will help the grantee be successful. They fund mentors to help you achieve your goals, fund conference admissions to non profit conferences, and are always available for advice.

Not only are they catalyzing great change in Los Angeles, but they are creating a network of leaders, coalesced into a community, that is contributing to a fabric of public policy innovation. They are really exceptional
Spread the word! More foundations need to learn from you!!
Their work is exceptionally strategic and well leveraged, with outstanding results.
The investment they make in leadership, leadership potential, and cultivation is unparalleled and invaluable. It's a very meaningful, strategic, and insightful investment of time that fosters and supports a culture of entrepreneurship which is so desperately needed in the social sector.

The Exec Director is amazingly accessible and helpful; definitely talk to her before you apply. Durfee leads from their belief in leadership, cross-sectoral problem solving, flexible and responsive culture. They also invest in folks they believe will join a cohort of former leaders they've invested in -- so they are building a set of folks who are leaders in LA in advancing justice.

Their signature program used to be Ex Dir sabbaticals -- helping worthy nonprofit EDs get a big break. Now they've added the Stanton Fellowship, a two year $75,000 grant for folks embedded in organizations (public, private or nonprofit) helping solve big intractable problems. They've gotten more targeted toward building skills and a network of key social justice oriented leaders. Not sure they started out that way, but that's what they like doing and are doing now.
Keep it up!
They're small but mighty! The best. I wish they gave away billions instead of a few million.
Be accessible.

Beyond any other foundation I have experienced as a professional and grant seeker, Durfee Foundation demonstrates a true and deep interest in applicants and grant recipients. As with all foundations, you need to understand what Durfee's mission and interests are to determine the fit. To that end, Durfee staff are friendly and accessible for inquiries.
