I did not know about the good of Durfee prior to my application i think this speaks to a call for more media attention about the Foundation and its programs
Supports innovative ideas - fosters out of the box thinking

Their Sabbatical Grant program is very generous and unique. They are great people to work with and genuinely care about their grantees.

I have no advice for them, only thanks.
They bring together their current and former grantees for group learning and ongoing connections in a very positive and effective manner!

Regarding the Durfee Sabbatical - pay careful attention to the criteria and reach out to prior grantees for their advice.

Amazing foundation, great great staff and Board. Goals and funding are perfectly aligned in part because the foundation provides so much support and guidance.

I would highly recommend applying for a Durfee grant. It is a thorough and multi-layered grant process, but done in a professional and thoughtful manner.

The funder is incredibly accessible.

I would recommend that they allow a grantee to apply again after a five year time period.
The funder shows compassion about the individual and their cause.

Wise to carefully read the requirements and if possible, to have a conversation in advance, but beyond worthwhile if given. Durfee goes above and beyond the grant provided, with the kind of support I had never dreamed existed.

This foundation seeks to build partnerships with individuals and institutions that share in the organizations ideals--integrity, entrepreneurial spirit, continuous learning, creativity and risk-taking, aligned with fiscal care. They seek to make grants where their funding will have the greatest impact and thus to help organizations leverage other opportunities. They are also brilliantly astute, providing support even to those organizations where outcome is either impossible to measure or will not be measured for years, and in this way they are attentive, creative, risk-takers. In every way imaginable, they are changing the face of the city they are working to change--Los Angeles. And they are magnificent partners.
I don't know that I have advice; I learn from them every week.
I think the fact that I have nothing negative to say at all says everything. At every turn, Durfee surprises in positive ways.
Assesses need and hones in on precise ways that need may be met--providing mentorships that are ideal.

Durfee has funded our work through the Sabbatical (1997) and Stanton Fellowship (2010) programs. The experience at the onset, through the application process and (equally important) after the grant was awarded was exceptionally positive. The access of staff during the process - application, site visits, etc - was encouraging and helpful.
Five stars, six if allowed. Durfee is as example of what we hope for in all grant seeking efforts.

Very successful indeed.
Durfee is not adverse to funding risk and the dividend in doing so in many cases is exponential.

Read the Durfee guidelines carefully. If you or your project are a fit consider calling the staff to check in. They were helpful before I wrote my proposal and asked specific questions to determine if the organization was a fit. The Staff is very clear about their mission and funding. They are also generous with their time to support the nonprofit community in LA in additional ways.

So available and open, plus the grant we had, the Springboard, came with mentorship which is amazing.

Frankly, our very young and small organization would not be here today serving a 10-million-person area without them.
Keep on rockin?
