Wise to carefully read the requirements and if possible, to have a conversation in advance, but beyond worthwhile if given. Durfee goes above and beyond the grant provided, with the kind of support I had never dreamed existed.

Durfee has funded our work through the Sabbatical (1997) and Stanton Fellowship (2010) programs. The experience at the onset, through the application process and (equally important) after the grant was awarded was exceptionally positive. The access of staff during the process - application, site visits, etc - was encouraging and helpful.

Five stars, six if allowed. Durfee is as example of what we hope for in all grant seeking efforts.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Gives more than money, Risk taker, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, Builds relationships, Likes site visits, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded, Responsive

Read the Durfee guidelines carefully. If you or your project are a fit consider calling the staff to check in. They were helpful before I wrote my proposal and asked specific questions to determine if the organization was a fit. The Staff is very clear about their mission and funding. They are also generous with their time to support the nonprofit community in LA in additional ways.
