They have made a huge difference in our ability to reach so many unserved older adults.
Create a Word template we can fill in and then just cut and paste. It takes a lot of time to do this for each grant but is necessary to stay organized.
Communicate.

It is advisable to speak to the program officers and learn as much as you can about the grant for which you are seeking funding. Make sure it aligns with funding priorities. My experience has been that the program officers are accessible, knowledgeable and genuinely want to help current and potential grantees. They can steer you in the right directions to enable you to make the best use of your time and efforts.

I have not had a need to reach out to my program officer much, but when I have, access has been no issue. Messages are returned promptly and I've not ever been made to feel as if my questions were a burden.

NextFifty Initiative is helping to transform the narrative around aging and longevity by supporting organizations and work that address these topics in innovative and substantive ways.
As other funders shift their priorities away from aging initiatives, the challenge of securing needed resources for aging-focused nonprofits becomes heightened. Please consider making general operating grants a continuing option for organizations in the aging space.
NextFifty Initiative has identified its niche as an organization that supports innovative aging programs and remains a reliable source of support for organizations in this area. NFI is not merely a transactional partner, but really seeks to be a thought partner as well to the organizations it supports.

Thank you for taking time to provide feedback. We are glad you found us to be accessible, as this is one of our priorities. We recognize that limited resources are available to support aging issues from philanthropy and we take seriously our role in supporting nonprofits focused on improving the lives of older adults. Furthermore, we appreciate you letting us know of the value of general operating grants for organizations like yours.

NFI is among the funders more focused on metrics and data tracking, so we advise you to keep detailed records of your work. Because we maintained this tracking during the project, reporting was a breeze and this first grant from NFI has been a great experience. We hope to foster a long relationship.

This was our third application to NFI, but our first to get funding. In all instances, we were able to talk to a program officer in advance of submitting the grant to ensure we remained on-target with their priorities.
Good
They are still somewhat new, but their focus on metrics helps ensure they're getting quantitative results. Perhaps some growth in terms of qualitative results is possible.
NFI is focused on programs that directly (not indirectly) benefit their target audience.
Responsive and informative before, during and after the grant.

I think the Next 50 Initiative is doing a great job seeking feedback to inform their goals and funding agencies that are the "boots on the ground"
continue to visit different areas of the state to inform work with more rural areas, not located in Denver Metro. COVID-19 changed the visit to virtual but it was still very much appreciated!
One of the most pleasant funder relationships I have experienced!
This funder has a very straightforward application process and reporting expectations, it is much appreciated.

Thank you for providing us with this feedback. We recognize the importance of increasing our understanding of what is happening across the state, not just in metro areas. We will continue to invest time and resources in visiting rural areas, in-person when possible or virtually. Thank you for sharing with us how important this is to you.

They were very easy to reach, talk with and we had a friendly report. I was encouraged by the ease of reporting and even when the budget sheet they used seemed onerous they worked with us to make it easy.

I would suggest that they explain other opportunities that were available to us once we did one project with them that could help keep us in the "know" for what else seemed appropriate for future funding.
Very clear about how they want to be acknowledged.

If you are intending to make a larger ask, be sure to talk with a program officer first. My beginning conversations were insightful for the funder's priorities and also helped me to know where to head with the application.

The focus just on older adults in Colorado is significant as resources are needed for this group and such targeting of efforts will bring results for this population.
When COVID-19 is over, or by Zoom before this, have some regional meetings to learn better how older adult serving organizations are working together, and especially in more rural areas. While some of this has been done in the past, I think NextFifty's problem solving perspective could lead to uniquely helpful conversations.
The program associate with whom I worked is super responsive and super nice!
Understands the target population with which it is working and the organizations that are doing the work in local areas.

Thank you for providing us feedback. It is our desire to be accessible and helpful, so we are happy to hear your discussion with one of our program officers was insightful. The idea of hosting more regional meetings is something we have discussed and we will continue to do so, as we want to continue to learn about how organizations are working together and to facilitate connections.
