The Racine Community Foundation is very aware of this area's many needs. They require a letter of intent/preliminary application before you are invited to submit a full proposal. While this may be considered "extra work" it allows the requesting organization to "introduce" the issue they are requesting in a shorter format, rather than completing a full application. Being invited to apply is not guarantee that your proposal will be funded. They will also, at times, ask you to request less via the proposal than you did via the pre-application process.

Extremely accessible and helpful! No question is looked upon as being "dumb" or insignificant. The staff is amazingly kind, knowledgeable, and truly wants you to be successful in your ask.

They fund a huge variety of worthy organizations with a huge variety of missions. I believe they truly care about the community as a whole and try to assist organizations across the board.
Keep doing what you're doing the way you're doing it!
I think that they communicate very well with funders and potential funders while being honest and forthcoming about their financial limitations. They can't fund every request, but I believe they try to as best they can with the resources they have. I like it that they send out a member of their grants committee to have a face-to-face meeting with people in the organization--they don't just rely on the requests as written. They get outside the office and see for themselves what the request is about.

Align your grant request with well -planned future needs. Since, in some cases, the time between the L of I and the actual application can be long, you must establish what your future needs will be. If your organization has received a grant in the past we believe it is helpful to include All outcomes that have positively impacted our community.

I have never had a problem with accessibility to staff and management of the RCF. I find the engagement of the foundation in the nonprofit community to be refreshing and we welcome the input.
Good
I have always been impressed by the awareness of local needs and the focus on organizations that demonstrate positive outcomes.
I believe that the sustainability of the RCF is of the highest importance. I am not certain that I see efforts from RCF to solicit different types of support such as annuities, life insurance etc. The citizens of Racine County have the ability to provide this sustainability for RCF. Perhaps as a grantee we are not aware of these efforts, but grantees could be source of donations and support (perhaps through solicitation) for the foundation.
Demonstrate and focus on impact. At times we get so wrapped in in monogramming we lose sight of letting others know what we are doing.
Community awareness!

Since they went to the process of a letter of intent in order to get the opportunity to even submit a grant, I have been turned down. Prior to that my organization received grants regularly. I am at the point of not wanting to waste my time. I understand they can't fund everyone but in looking at who and what they are funding, they tend to give to larger projects and projects with multiple partners. That's not to say they do not give to single organizations sometimes.

I have been turned down twice in attempting to submit a proposal. The communication that I received was pretty standard with no suggestions for future proposals. Or how about a representative reaching out to those they turn down to meet and discuss future requests.
I think with they new system of submitting a letter or request to be able to submit a grant proposal, they should have categories available and you would choose the one that applies to your need. Example: Multiple organizations who partner for a project, Capital improvements vs Programs, smaller organizations. Just a thought. I'm not even sure how that would work or if it would make a difference. Perhaps so many dollars available to different types of funding. Review the grant materials in advance, prior to submitting a letter of intent. This is not a grant that can be written at the last minute. Specific questions are asked within the application and should be shared with the nonprofit board to gain a consensus on moving forward with the grant application. In this way, the grant writing experience is worthwhile, strategically focused and productive. The end result is well worth it!

Communication. They want to know YOUR organization! If selected for review, usually a member of their grant team will visit with the leadership team of the nonprofit. Good two way conversation!

I would share that the grant process is simple and straight-forward; however, the process is also quite competitive. All applications should be thorough in order to be strongly considered.
