The application is fairly straight forward. It never hurts to know someone in the foundation, but depending on the scope and focus of the grant, you have a decent shot either way.

They are trying to prioritize initiatives for communities who are often overlooked by other funders.

Circulate your RFPs more widely. We were able to hear of this opportunity from a friend of a friend at the last minute.
Keep trying and keep an eye out for specific initiatives.
We had a great zoom call to affirm the grant award and the representatives were intent on letting us know that we should be in touch with any follow up questions, updates, and interest in continuing the relationship past the grant cycle.

Try to make the process a bit simpler. :) And check in with both the artist and partner presenters so that there is adherence to the initial MOU and to help navigate significant changes to the artist's initial intent.
If possible the funder should look at continuing funding support even after an initial presentation/performance because projects just stop after they go so far - but sometimes not far enough to have the work fully realized.
The fund allows artists to partner directly with the presenter who has a shared ownership in the work.

Make sure the team is strong and makes sense for the project. Go for it! We were a team of experienced creatives but we had never done immersive theater before. They took a chance on us and it really paid off.

This funder has been re-envisioning their priorities and practices in a comprehensive way. We appreciate the in-depth manner in which they've been approaching this. It's not easy to balance day-to-day operations and big pivots.

This funder had some months when they were unable to be in touch due to their internal shifts, and has been in closer touch now that the big project is further underway. We've appreciated getting updates on the process.

This funders has been very important to the arts and culture field in the Bay Area for decades. We look forward to their next iteration of funding support after their strategic refresh that will be looking at arts and culture in a more comprehensive framework.
We were very grateful to receive sustaining support that didn't require a new application, after a thoughtful conversation with our program officer.
Balancing support for arts and culture organizations and artists, as essential parts of the ecosystem.

A lot of stewardship was needed before applying and securing the grant, but post-award the reporting requirements are very minimal (just one annual update).

The sample response is very appropriate. You're best off having a conversation before applying, but it's difficult to get anyone to respond or set up a call unless you have an "in."

Bad
Very slow response time.
Greater transparency and willingness to work with an organization to see how their programming may or may not fit the foundations guidelines.
Part of problem with this funder is their goals are not at all clear. Apparently they are revising their goals, but there is no transparency as far as how that might be affecting future grant opportunities.
Their name is valuable, if you have been funded by them.

The Haas Fund made time to have a phone call with us before we submitted our application, so I would recommend that all colleagues reach out to have an introductory phone call to get advice on whether their organization fits with the Haas Fund's priorities.

Our program officer at the Haas Fund was extraordinarily responsive and worked to make the process as easy for us as possible.
Good
They are working to make their application process easy for potential grantees. We were able to submit a proposal that we had already submitted to another foundation, and this eased the burden of work on our small development staff. This will go a long way toward supporting equity and access in their grantmaking.
Please continue to accept applications submitted to other foundations! This made all the difference when we were on a quick turnaround for our application deadline.
They are extremely responsive and understanding.
