The sample response is very appropriate. You're best off having a conversation before applying, but it's difficult to get anyone to respond or set up a call unless you have an "in."

Bad
Very slow response time.
Greater transparency and willingness to work with an organization to see how their programming may or may not fit the foundations guidelines.
Part of problem with this funder is their goals are not at all clear. Apparently they are revising their goals, but there is no transparency as far as how that might be affecting future grant opportunities.
Their name is valuable, if you have been funded by them.

The Haas Fund made time to have a phone call with us before we submitted our application, so I would recommend that all colleagues reach out to have an introductory phone call to get advice on whether their organization fits with the Haas Fund's priorities.

Our program officer at the Haas Fund was extraordinarily responsive and worked to make the process as easy for us as possible.

They are working to make their application process easy for potential grantees. We were able to submit a proposal that we had already submitted to another foundation, and this eased the burden of work on our small development staff. This will go a long way toward supporting equity and access in their grantmaking.
Please continue to accept applications submitted to other foundations! This made all the difference when we were on a quick turnaround for our application deadline.
They are extremely responsive and understanding.

We were funded $500 to complete the second phase of a grant application, which we have not submitted (due this Thursday)
The funder communicates with applicants very well.

I would recommend that the trusted colleague establish a relationship with the funders' staff. The staff are empowered to work with community organizations and are good advocates.

I'm not certain how the funder sees it's goals; so not quite equipped to answer fully.
The funder should provide cohort convenings together to help communities learnings and broad based support for and with each other. Also, create an opportunity to funders leadership to meet with those who are funded.
The funder stays connected and understands the work we do.

Always gracious and understand nonprofits well. Our support has been largely board directed, but the staff are always respectful and helpful.

They responded rapidly to COVID-related issues for that poor people were experiencing such as rental assistance. They were making additional funding available at a moment's notice without adding any bureaucracy. Terrific staff, too! Very compassionate.

We have a Safety Net grant from the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, which is an older part of their giving portfolio. They have been great to work with.

As a long-time grantee, I greatly appreciated the understanding demonstrated by the foundation of what nonprofits are experiencing this year by waiving the reporting requirements for the grant this year.

Take the time to build relationship with the program officers and other key staff. Ask questions and continue to stay engaged whether you are funded or not.
