Email exchanges have been pretty productive for us and helpful to exchange directly with them when questions arise.

We didn't have a previous connection to the Foundation but we submitted a concept paper and were invited to submit a full proposal. They provided detailed instructions and were responsive to questions. The most important thing is to clearly show your alignment and impact!

The foundation seems open to new requests, although they are open that only a small percentage are invited to submit a full proposal. Familiarize yourself with their grant priorities and program areas and be specific in describing how your organization aligns in your concept paper.

Most recently, I am very impressed by a convening orchestrated by this funder to bring grantees together to discuss and share information about the impact of the current administration on organizational goals. It was very informative and an excellent way to build community.

I would let them know that, as long as they fit within the guidelines, the L.B Research Foundation is an amazing partner to have in their corner.

L.B. Research & Education Foundation has been one of the most thoughtful, and philanthropically progressive funders I've worked with. We had the option to submit a grant application used to request funds from a previous funder, and though we chose to submit original work, this was greatly appreciated. They have been responsive, timely, supportive, and these qualities have allowed our organization to focus on our mission and impact rather than jumping through hoops to appease a grantor.

I imagine that they have been very successful at accomplishing their philanthropic goals. Their process allows grantees to stay mission-focused. This strategy promotes the best nonprofit work for organizations driven by measurable outcomes and community impact.
Good
Share your process with other funders.
They will take a chance on a new grantee.
Self-reflection. It's rare to come across a funder who solicits feedback from grantees in a meaningful way. By engaging grantees in the evolution of their process, they enable organizations to realize their full potential.

Reach out to the funder and schedule a meeting with them to introduce your organization and program and learn more about the funder's priorities. Ask them questions, including how to structure your proposal, feedback on previous applications (if any), and appropriate amount to request. You will be pleasantly surprised by how eager they are to help you and see you succeed.

The Executive Director is the main point of contact for the organization. He is incredibly responsive, warm, collegial, and respectful.

Rather well. They focus on education and health, and to the best of my knowledge, fund projects/programs across those fields. However, I don't have detailed information about their current and past grantees, so I write my response to this question based on that limited knowledge.
I generally mostly have very positive things to say but one piece of constructive suggestion would be to build a website so that you are more accessible to grant seekers. I would also suggest making the grant priorities and timeline documents more easily accessible to grant seekers (perhaps adding a link to them on grant databases, such as Instrumentl). I would also echo another reviewer and suggest considering offering multi-year funding, especially in this current political climate when many organizations are facing significant federal funding cuts.
Relationship building seems to be key to their funding strategy, so don't be shy about reaching out and introducing your organization. While a strong application does matter and will make a difference, the relationship is equally important.
Communication and feedback. Another reviewer described them as "refreshingly straightforward," and I would agree. In a world where funders often don't respond to emails, don't return phone calls, and don't offer feedback on declined applications other than saying they received too many of them, L.B. Research stands out as an exceptional foundation that respects the time and effort of its grantees. They make time to meet with and support applicants in the application process and truly treat them as equal partners and colleagues. When many funders just talk about addressing inequity and power imbalances between funders and grantees but don't actually do much to minimize or eliminate them, L.B. Research makes a genuine effort to ensure that grantees are treated as equals.

Our experience was that the Foundation staff was very accessible and questions were answered in a timely manner.

The Foundation is focused on providing funding to promote access to health and wellness services in under-resourced communities. I think their funding is helping to reduce health care inequalities and disparities.
I deeply appreciate that the application process and subsequent reports are not labor intensive. Keep the process the same.
No
The funder takes an active role in learning about our goals and objectives. They see themselves as partners and willing to provide guidance and share other grantees that can help advance our mission.

Consider exploring capacity building grants for growing organizations that may need operating support such as additional staffing.
The L.B. Research and Education Foundation is a phenomenal organization to work with.
The L.B. Research and Education Foundation had very insightful questions during our meetings and site visits. The representatives were genuinely interested in our mission and making an impact in the community.
