CAN'T TELL IF CAFRITZ WANTS TO GO IN BUSINESS WITH A CHARITY OR SUPPORT IT? Besides a tedious application, they require previous fiscal year budget versus actuals, current fiscal year financial statement, year-to-date balance sheet and financial statement, next fiscal year’s organizational budget, current fiscal year funding sources, copy of most recent Form 990 filed with the Internal Revenue Service, and the audits.

The Cafritz Foundation staff are easy to engage with and responsive. I would recommend reaching out to them to discuss your funding needs to ensure your organization and project aligns with their mission and discuss the process.

I have had a great experience Applying to Cafritz. Had an opportunity to talk with a Program Officer who explained the process and gave feedback on the last proposal that was not funded. I think the application is lengthy, maybe the project form does not need to have the Organization section, and you can just add pertinent organizational questions.

1. Understand your business's essential funding needs which are not being met. Or, your focus project that needs funding.
2. Have organized succinct information and metrics to support your funding.
3. Allow enough time to gather or create grant requested items not already created (e.g., summary of staff bios on one document).
4. Enjoy the latitude the application framework allows to truly describe your mission and impact. It's absolutely gratifying. Even if we don't receive the grant I feel like I was heard.

Foundations should focus on quality of outcomes as well as numbers served. How is the person doing, what services did they receive, did you improve their quality and/or meet your goals. It appears that outputs and outcomes are looking at numbers and percentages of impersonal data. We focus on improving one's quality of life and wellbeing and what that looks like. We also measure this and capture the data to analyze and share. I believe this a truer measure of positive impact.
Share your approach with other foundations. Help them understand the essential requirement for general unrestricted funding for operating expenses and salaries, with multiyear sustainment funding. Nonprofits cannot get business loans to provide revenue for startup and general operating expenses. Yet we are filling all the human services and gaps in needs that for-profits and government agencies are not. This has always perplexed me, as I work in both environments (for-profit and nonprofit). Thank you for listening! Where's the funding vs. return on investment balance?

Because Cafritz gives options for types of grants (e.g., General, Capital, Project) it allows the applicant to choose what best fits their current needs. This also diminishes nonprofit barriers to receive funding they might not feel administratively equipped to apply. This was a refreshing, and I think a new foundation application approach, that I hope other foundations will follow.

We made sure to have a meeting to bring our contact person at Cafritz up to date on our current status and activities, and receive advice about what to stress in our application.

Excellent communications. The grant questions were also well done - not too repetitive and I appreciated the general guidance on pages rather than "5000 characters" type restrictions.

Closely read the grant guidance for the narrative and attachments. There were some attachments requested that a funder has never asked for before. Give yourself plenty of time to write, review and submit the application.

I would suggest some of the attachments are not necessary to determine the viability of an organization and could be cut to shorten the application
Looks to support the whole nonprofit including with additional services like their partnership with Catch-a-Fire for expert volunteers.
