This funder encourages informational virtual meeting with your program officer before applying. I had to ask who the new program officer was and met with two people who are in interim roles.

Keep up the great work. Keep asking us about our successes and challenges. Offer workshops again - they were great back in the day!
If you are in the DMV area (DC, MD, VA), you should apply.
This funder has always really cared about the full scope of nonprofit operations, not just the clients and outcomes. For example, they want to know about your board, staff, finances and behind the scenes work that goes into making the organization a success.

This is a very lengthy and time consuming grant proposal. Be sure you have all your organizational financial reports and documents in one place, as well as general organizational narratives pre-written to pull from. Project grants are typical questions but although the online portal says to use traditional spacing, bullets, etc. it does not allow for that functionality in practice.

Great details online and via online FAQ sessions, and willingness to discuss ahead of time, but the portal and all the various documents seems overkill for a proposal. Perhaps move that to pre-award approval process, and just require basics like audit & 990 at the proposal stage.
Make the online portal questions more streamlined and able to take Word processing formatting, and narrow them down. Too many repetitive questions if applying for a project grant as they are similar to the organizational questions.

The Cafritz foundation is committed to our local community and to building partnerships with their grantees. They are open to a conversation - don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions. When you build your case, keep your program officer in mind. Are you giving them what you need to make a good case to the trustees for funding your organization?

It's helpful to reach out to a Program Officer to determine eligibility because the application process is pretty onerous. It's geared largely toward established institutions - with committed Finance and Development teams who can provide advanced reporting and financial documentation, as well as compelling written narrative. Program Officers have always been helpful (I've worked with this funder for many years across a couple of different organizations and have never had any issues).

I would say the Funder is pretty accessible, but it can take time to get something scheduled. Everyone seems to be busy these days.
I would really like to see a streamlined application process, especially for renewing grantees - perhaps incorporating the mid-term report into the renewal request as those come so close together.

My program officer is AMAZING. So genuinely interested in our work, so helpful, and just nice.

I am impressed with the authenticity of the foundation. I was able to attend the celebration of life for Mr. Cafritz and came away feeling proud to be associated with them.
Since the pandemic, there have been a lot of changes to the foundation world. Many of the grant proposal processes have been shortened. The proposal and report are often combined. Several funders instruct us to submit a proposal we have done for another funder to preserve staff time. I think there was a real recognition that non-profit staffs were stretched thin. Cafritz is at the far end of this curve. I would suggest you consider surveying/speaking with some of your peers. Your application process is rather onerous and not in line with what we experience with other funders. We love you--and we'd love a more compact process as well.
Great website. Great staff. Our program officer has shared words that helped me better understand the context of my own program. Very wise. Also, the various Zooms, materials, meetings, etc. that you share with grantees is AMAZING. I really, really appreciate those!

CAN'T TELL IF CAFRITZ WANTS TO GO IN BUSINESS WITH A CHARITY OR SUPPORT IT? Besides a tedious application, they require previous fiscal year budget versus actuals, current fiscal year financial statement, year-to-date balance sheet and financial statement, next fiscal year’s organizational budget, current fiscal year funding sources, copy of most recent Form 990 filed with the Internal Revenue Service, and the audits.

The Cafritz Foundation staff are easy to engage with and responsive. I would recommend reaching out to them to discuss your funding needs to ensure your organization and project aligns with their mission and discuss the process.

I have had a great experience Applying to Cafritz. Had an opportunity to talk with a Program Officer who explained the process and gave feedback on the last proposal that was not funded. I think the application is lengthy, maybe the project form does not need to have the Organization section, and you can just add pertinent organizational questions.
