Once we were able to speak directly with a program officer we felt more encouraged that the application would be taken seriously. The staff are clearly committed to making a difference.

It's best to cultivate positive relation ship with the funder. They are highly professional and among the few funders that really understand the need for general operating funding. It's not easy to get funded, but when that happens, this foundation support a long term relationship.

The staff is highly professional and truly invested in understanding applicants. it's not difficult to have sustained conversations going.
I am a new grantee so i should go through a full cycle before offering improvement suggestions.
if you don't succeed the first time you apply, and you are a good fit, don't be discouraged!

The staff at the Cafritz Foundation hold very helpful information sessions regularly throughout the year about the grant application process. I would encourage anyone who is considering applying to the foundation to attend one of these sessions as I found it to be very helpful.

The staff at the Cafritz Foundation were wonderfully responsive and followed up immediately by email and phone. I set up a phone call with one of their staff members to receive feedback on a past application, which they shared and which was very helpful.

Keep doing what you are doing and try to convince some other funders to do the same.
They are very supportive of professional fundraisers. They understand how hard this work can be and really want to make it easier.

The grant proposal and reporting process is relatively lengthy, and requires enough financial reporting that this funder is best for a nonprofit with strong financial management. They are great champions of DC-area nonprofits, and many grants include a match, which can be helpful in fundraising campaigns.

Start the application/reporting process early. This is a relatively long application, with an interim and final report. If you plan ahead, you won't be caught off-guard.

Cafritz is a relationship-based funder first and foremost. Once they agree to fund an organization, they tend to give a little bit of money every year, over many years. Like many foundations, they care more about metrics than results. By this I mean that you have to have metrics, but they really don't have any clear guidelines for how to measure the performance of their grantees. So if you do get funded, keep the relationship strong. They'll fund even not-so-great organizations for many years if the relationship is a good one. Now under new leadership, it will be interesting to see how or if the foundation changes.

Once the relationship is established, project officers are very accessible. More than other foundations we've been funded by, they are great at helping groups to figure out a path to getting in the door.

They provide needed general support grants across a wide spectrum of organizations. So if those are their goals, they more than accomplish them. It's less clear that they have a specific strategy to transform any sector.
Get out of your silo. Work with other foundations to help address our region's many issues. I
Relationship, relationship, relationship.
All lovely people, the staff are very warm and caring.
