they say having relationships with the funder doesn't matter, but in our experience, it definitely did.
They offer clarity on what is necessary for successful applications.

They are lovely to work with and I have found their staff to be very forthright on where they are and what their priorities are within the funding areas. Meet the program officer in your funding area and help them understand your work and if it is a match with what they are funding.

The funder is truly committed to the geographic area they serve in the greater DC area. I appreciate that clarity and focus.
The application and number of attachments is super long.
I really appreciate the non-funding resources they send to their network.

I'd recommend that you actively engage with other grantees of the foundation who can share with the funder their experiences with you and your organization. The foundation is more likely to fund you if you have a solid reputation among your nonprofit peers.

I think the funder could better accomplish its goals if it more readily increased its grant size to its more trusted grantees.
It would be so helpful if this foundation would help us open conversations/opportunities with other funders.
Our program officer has taken the time over the years to deeply understand our work. She asks great questions!

Survey charities in the District and select the ones that are already doing great work without your support.
Accounting details requests. Our small charity does not have an accountant but we had to become accountants to fulfill the accounting details that were requested. Philanthropies should trust charities to make social change a bit more likely.
