Def have a meeting with the point person in your field/area before submitting for guidance on what funder is looking for, if seems a good fit/not, what kind of funding to apply for and how much.

Definitely attend the quarterly zoom info meetings for applicants and bring your questions. The sessions have always had responsive and knowledgeable people available.

Make sure you read through the whole application before the info session so you'll have your questions ready. Also, work with whatever book keeper you have to get the financial docs in order.
The quarterly information meetings for applicants was invaluable as was the Q&A opportunity.

If you are a first time applicant to any grantor, as I am, read everything you can, login and start the application to see what is there before you decide what type of grant to apply for. The Cafritz Foundation provides all of the information you need, so long as you click on all you can.

The only problem I had with the application is when I went to submit it. All the steps were complete and when I hit submit there was a long lag and then I would get an error message that said Error Saving Changes. I probably tried it 6-8 times and was also online with Connie (who was great) for 20 minutes who gave some suggestions and also tried with my user name and password and was also unsuccessful. Finally this morning it went through. Just fyi as I don't know if there is a problem with the system.
Look into any system problems.
The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation is very thorough, in the philanthropic aspects, financial standing, organizational structure and in-person review of their grantees.

Attend the pre-application webinar. See if you can speak to a staff member prior to beginning the application if you have a specific project in mind.

Budget plenty of time to get all the supporting materials! Start at least 1 month in advance

I would definitely participate in the Zoom call meeting before you apply. That was super informative and is important to prepare for submitting your application.

They have been very very successful at helping so many folks in virtually all walks of life who through a variety of reasons have had to face difficult challenges. They have impacted a huge number of people across a wide spectrum.
Please continue to do the Zoom meetings for prospective applicants.
They're great to work with, and they understand that sometimes general funding works well for folks, giving them flexibility to meet and/or adapt to changing environments and challenges.
We have just submitted an application for a grant. We are asking funding for general support, not for a project, not for capital campaign
They do the best job they can at affording opportunities to folks to be well prepared and informed to submit applications that can achieve both their Foundation's and the applicant's goals.

The application is quite thorough and requires a lot of attachments (some that we had already, but many that we needed to create), so definitely start working on the application early.

I don't feel qualified to speak into their impact beyond our program.
The length of the application is overwhelming. I'd recommend editing the process to make it more streamlined for grantees.
The formality of the process, their high-end office space (if you ever visit in person), and the length of the application can make the process feel impersonal and imposing. I'd definitely recommend attending one of their helpful Q&A sessions before applying to help make the process feel more personal.
It is incredibly helpful that they are open to general operating grants. I also love that they send out other resources to grantees, such as opportunities for other funding.
