The Nellie Mae Education Foundation encourages prospective applicants to reach out with any questions regarding the grant opportunity or the application process. We did, and they were very informative, helpful, and receptive to our thoughts/questions. I recommend you schedule a meeting.

Very accessible. They responded very promptly when we requested a call to discuss the grant opportunity. In addition, they aided us really quickly when we had a technical question related to their platform.

I suggest that you read the pdf of the RFP very carefully. Once I started writing the grant, I read the RFP again and got very good clarification on my questions, just by learning the Nellie Mae mission points.

All you need to know as far as what they are looking for and the best way to make direct contact / get questions answered is clearly articulated in their RFP - refreshing!

I’m not in a position to assess the organization, but I appreciate the effort they’re making. The foundation did no go for low hanging fruit. I admire the vision and ambition they have.
Consider West Haven as part of its service area. For some reason it was left out. Regarding public and secondary education, West Haven is in terrible shape compared to New Haven and the other surrounding towns. West Haven gets overlooked. (Full disclosure: I work and live in New Haven)
Great communication with prospective grantees

It's helpful to have a call with the funder to learn more and to introduce the work. Also, racial equity needs to be at the heart of your work.

we would like to see Nellie Mae have a critical eye to building cross-race, cross-place, cross-class funding opportunities towards racial justice in education.
Previous grants with Nellie Mae we were funded at the full amount. This grant we have not yet heard.
Nellie Mae is the only funder who funds organizing at a level that allows you to focus more on the work and less on chasing more grants/funding.

The foundation just rolled out their funding priorities and it completely aligns with their new mission, vision and values. The next and most important phase is implementation.
Implement with fidelity.
This funder is extremely responsive to community needs.

This new approach is very open ended which carries its pros and cons. The pros are that it allows a lot of freedom, and it's stated that they are accepting of any past information or proposal as a narrative, but in a situation like ours where this wasn't the case and building a submission from ground up, it almost seemed overly daunting because there was minimal direction.
Granted [pun intended], this is a subjective experience and now that we've experienced it once it makes it a lot easier and more inviting, be prepared to well in advance have numerous readers and eyes on proposal and thought partnership on supplemental material to get your point across on such an open ended approach.

In approaches like this last one, it is a fantastic practice of creating a more inclusive process. But I wonder, with a small, invite only RFP like this one that is so open ended in it's approach, and already having a relationship with the orgs, would an intentional pre-conversation of served well with each org? or would that of just hindered the process?
They really are starting to create an inclusive landscape with an intention of naming race as an issue. And this new approach is definitely more welcoming.
